Local restaurant introduces dog-friendly menu and 'Pooch Hooch'

Every streetwise dog in Bend knows where to find the canine-friendly restaurants and hotspots. From spacious patios stocked with ice cold water dishes to friendly servers who welcome you with treats in hand, there's no shortage of chill spots for a mutt to hang out. Word on the street is new kid on the block, River Pig Saloon, offers complimentary bacon treats on Tuesdays for its Yappy Hour. Next door at Fix & Repeat, dogs with wheat allergies can find gluten-free, peanut butter dog treats.

But one of the most extensive dog menu offerings in Bend is at J-DUB, a longtime, dog-friendly establishment with a great patio for relaxing during those dog days of summer.

J-DUB just launched its Pup Menu at their Paws on the Patio event at the end of June, benefiting the Bend Spay & Neuter Project. The Grilled Chicken and Sweet Potato Mash Bowl, Pot Roast and Rice Bowl, Peanut Butter Turkey Bowl and plain Pub Patties (for the paleo pups out there) are all catered specifically to the canine palate. The crowning jewel of the menu is the Pooch Hooch, brewed on-site in small batches. Non-carbonated and non-alcoholic, Pooch Hooch is made of beef, malt and a dash of glucosamine to keep your pup's joints strong.

What Dogs Think

Basil, a seven-year-old black lab, thoroughly enjoyed the house-made concoction on a recent lazy Sunday on the patio. Also known as "Crazil" because of her fondness for fetching just about everything, Basil is an energetic soul who enjoys swimming with her human, an avid paddle boarder named Craig Sowers. Basil's perfect day is wearing herself out swimming all day and then chilling at J-DUB's at their outside bar.

Ziggy Rock, a miniature poodle named after Ziggy Marley, is a social drinker. Always happy to see a familiar (or not-so-familiar) face, Ziggy will greet every human, dog or friendly horse from a mile away. This Sunday afternoon, he was joined for lunch by his humans, Sandy and Rocky Catt. While Ziggy has been to J-DUB many a time, this was his first time trying the Pup Menu. He found the portions to be very generous (he needed a doggy bag to take the remainder of his Grilled Chicken and Sweet Potato dish home) and found the Pooch Hooch to hit the spot on the hot summer's afternoon.

For dogs looking to try something new at a tried-and-true staple, the Sunday morning patio pup scene is popping.
