Drag Show Is Not Discriminatory

I’ve been working with the Human Dignity Coalition since 2002 and one of the things I am most proud of is the feedback we get that our events feel safe for our whole community.

I've been working with the Human Dignity Coalition since 2002 and one of the things I am most proud of is the feedback we get that our events feel safe for our whole community. Whether it is Bend Pride or our drop-in nights for young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trangender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ), we want all people to feel welcome and accepted. In small town Bend, there are no gay bars or youth centers that serve people who are LGBTQ. HDC strives to bridge this gap, providing social opportunities as well as services for our community.

HDC's annual Drag Show has been happening since 2003, with the support of the nationally known Drag performer Poison Waters. She can often be seen in Portland at the Darcelle XV Showplace. Darcelle, a fellow Drag performer of 50 years, is being recognized this year as a Trans Hero by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force as being "one of the most Trans supportive personalities in the United States." Following Darcelle's example and the trend of otherDrag Shows across the country, the HDC Drag Show has been a place for people to meet and to celebrate being who they are. Over the years, our audience has been transgender, lesbian, gay, bisexual and straight. This is an evening to recognize that we are all unique and we all have a place in this world. A place in Bend. Drag performances have been happening for centuries and HDC is proud to be a part of this tradition as we work to create a community that celebrates diversity and is stronger because of it.

We look forward to seeing you at Boondocks on Saturday night, October 9 in downtown Bend. The show starts promptly at 8, so don't be late. You can find more information at www. humandignitycoalition.org
