Rites of Passage Gone Awry

What it's like being a senior amidst the pandemic
It was the first day of high school, that telltale dreaded 24 hours of nerves, expectations and inevitable disappointment. My heart fluttered as I gripped the straps of my backpack and crossed the building's threshold.

Pandemic School Year

2020-2021 may be the weirdest school year in Central Oregon since 1918
This fall, only the youngest students in the Bend-La Pine Schools district will go back to their brick-and-mortar classrooms, but COVID prevention protocols will begin the minute they step on the school bus. Most local students will not come to campus at all.

Bright Futures Ahead

In-school and private college counseling help local high school students plan their next steps.
When I was a high school junior, my "college counseling" consisted of sitting down with my school counselor, who asked me what my future plans were and reminded me of upcoming dates for the ACT and SAT. Selecting a college, back in the '90s, involved paging through pamphlets sent by regional schools through that throwback called "the mail."

Education Funding Boost for Local Kids

Student Success Act will bring at least $14 million to Bend-La Pine schools
Students throughout Central Oregon will benefit from the passage of the Student Success Act, which will bring millions to the region to support student mental health, early childhood education and high school graduation programs. "I've worked in education in Oregon for 34 years and we've never had this kind of influx of money," said Lora Nordquist, assistant superintendent of Bend-La Pine Schools.
