Munch and Movies: Gravity
The popular end-of-summer series, Munch and Movies, starts this week at Northwest Crossing with the Sandra Bullock/George Clooney space thriller Gravity. While Neil deGrasse Tyson says most of the science is inaccurate and somewhat laughable, some people do not need accurate science-ing in their movies to still find them enjoyable. In fact, why not keep every film as scientifically inaccurate as possible to keep us as a society on our toes and to encourage us to do our own research. If someone buys a ticket to Gravity and thought they were getting a ticket to Cosmos, it is understandable, but this is a Sandra Bullock movie which only promises explosions and chair-gripping intensity. On those fronts, it delivers.

Doctor Who (Season Premiere)
When last we saw our two-hearted Doctor, he had regenerated as the brilliant Welsh actor Peter Capaldi. The Series Eight premiere will see The Doctor and his companion Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) traveling to Victorian London to check out reports of spontaneous human combustion and dinosaurs in the Thames. Now that there is a much larger age gap between The Doctor and his companion (Capaldi is 56 and Coleman is 28), then maybe Doctor Who can stop with the companion always crushing on the Doctor and get back to what makes the show great: time traveling space shenanigans. No matter what, the excitement for new episodes is palpable in geek communities like Portland (which actually has its own Doctor Who themed bar, The Tardis Room), Seattle and everywhere because Doctor Who is awesome.

Sharknado 2: The Second One
Your whole life has been building to this moment. There have been prestige event movies before. Movies like Schindler's List, The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane and now... Sharknado 2: The Second One. Witness Tara Reid put down the bottle long enough to get her hand bitten off by airborne sharks! Be enraptured by the lead singer of Sugar Ray's flop sweat! Watch hungrily as Jared Fogle eats a subway sandwich IN AN ACTUAL SUBWAY!!!!!! There are so many things that make this movie a singular achievement in the history of human evolution similar to the invention of antibiotics and the discovery of fire, but it must be witnessed in person to truly understand. Watch this movie with those that you love so you can see their lives irrevocably changed before your eyes.

The Karate Kid
This summer's Twilight Film series in Sunriver has seen some of the finest family entertainment of the last few decades screened free for the public. This week is no different as they present The Karate Kid, the tragic story of the honorable Cobra Kai dojo and the young sociopath Danny LaRusso who brings them down. Be careful of the bouncy house at the Village in Sunriver, as this reporter knows its alluring bouncing pleasures and also its stomach-altering bite. Corn dogs + Bouncy House = re-evaluation of life choices.
