Film Events 8/26-9/2

Munch & Movies: Maleficent

The annual outdoor film festival geared for kids and families continues. Although late entries, these events are often summertime favorites; relaxed, good natured events. This week's film: Angelina Jolie stars in Maleficent, part of the new line of Disney films that are breaking from the standards (Bambi, Cinderella), but stick with the same themes of evil witches and cursed babies.

6 – 10 pm, Friday, August 28. Northwest Crossing's Compass Park, 2500 NW Crossing Dr. Free.

Slavery by Another Name

Double down: An award-winning PBS documentary based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Douglas A. Blackmon. Released in 2008, the book focuses on the 80 years between the end of slavery and the beginning of World War II, a period of time during which many African-Americans were re-cast into an economic slavery and working class labor force that provided few escapes. The film includes interviews of descendants of some of these men and women. Presented by the Green Team.

6:30 pm, Tuesday, September 1. First Presbyterian Church, 230 NE 9th. Free.

Note: Since going to press, the following event has been postponed.

Asgard Project

Leo Holding is a contemporary British explorer—young, handsome, ambitious and thrilled to free climb any mountain because, well, it's there! This film captures his attempt to make a first free ascent on the North Tower of the Mt Asgard on Baffin Island deep in the Arctic. Maybe not the best planning ever (they arrive late in the season), and, land ho, things, not surprisingly, begin to go wrong. Presented by Fleet Feet Sports.

6 pm, Tuesday September 1. McMenamins Old St Francis, 700 NW Bond. $5.
