Untrammeled & The Meaning of Wild

Deschutes National Forest and the nonprofit organization Discover Your Forest presents a double feature of films celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Untrammeled features the Scapegoat and Bob Marshall wilderness areas and focuses on a group of Montana high school students who have never experienced wilderness before. The Meaning of Wild follows a wildlife cameraman through the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska as he travels by boat, foot, kayak and plane. These films are guaranteed to have some of the finest wildlife and nature photography seen in years.

Fri., Sept. 26, 5 pm. McMenamins. $5.

The Boxtrolls with Morgan Hay

The Boxtrolls is the upcoming film from the Portland-area stop-motion animation studio Laika. Owned by Phil Knight with his son Travis acting as CEO and President, Laika is two-for-two so far with past releases Coraline and ParaNorman exceeding critical and commercial expectations. Laika's Morgan Hay will be on hand at the screening of The Boxtrolls at Sisters Movie House to not only introduce the film, but to also bring along some of the original puppets from the film. (See full review, Page 38.) The filmmakers over at Laika are truly exceptional artists and visionaries and this event should not be missed by fans of animation and of the brand that Laika is brilliantly cultivating.

Sat., Sept. 27, 2:30 pm. Sisters Movie House. $7.50

Almost Ablaze

TGR (Teton Gravity Research) presents its newest ski and snowboard film on the big screen of the Tower Theatre. Packed to the brim with some of the most breathtaking cinematography and death-defying snowriding ever put to film, Almost Ablaze appears to be a spellbinding look into some of the world's deadliest routes. All of the riders are also wired for sound, making this one of the most immersive ski films in history as their pain, triumph and exhilaration are captured with no barriers. At the screening, enter to win a ton of prizes including the tour's grand prize: a heli-skiing trip for two. If you can't make this one, TGR will be back on October 18 for the one-night-only premiere of Higher, the final installment of the Jeremy Jones trilogy that began with 2010's Deeper and 2012's Further.

Wed., Oct. 1, 8pm. Tower Theatre. $12.
