Helping Hands Needed For Scouts' Chicken Coop Raising

Attention handymen and handywomen.

The Bend Community Center is looking for volunteers to help with a chicken coop and greenhouse raising project this weekend, which also happens to be Earth Day.

The project is spearheaded by a pair of local middle school girls who coordinated the group effort as part of their Girl Scouts’ program. Audrey Parks, 14, and Beth Bennett, 13, came up with idea of chicken coop and greenhouse that could provide fresh poultry and produce to the community center as part of their scout troop Silver Award. The pair secured a $1,000 grant from Deschutes County to help pay for the materials. They also secure donations from Country Feed and Pet Supply, Safeway, Celebrate the Season and Longboard Louie’s, which will be providing lunch.

All they need now is some extra hands to help with the proverbial heavy lifting and hammering, which is set for tomorrow (Sat.) morning at 10 a.m. The project requires roughly 15 volunteers who are asked to gather at 1016 NW 15th St. on Bend’s westside.
