How to Walk Outside Today

This morning, I walked outside of my house and noticed that, due to Snowpocalypse 3: The Reckoning, my steps and driveway had turned into an outdoor ice skating rink. Now, this would be awesome if I was Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone, and had two bumbling burglars trying to rob my parent’s empty house. But I was just trying to get to work and I don’t have health insurance.

This got me thinking about shoe choices. Below are some of my suggestions for what to wear when boots just don’t cut it:

1. YakTrax

These are probably the most practical options. You slide them onto the outside of your shoes, and unless you are on 100% ice, the metal coils keep you pretty steady on your feet.

2. Crampons

A little burlier, these are like YakTrax on steroids – but instead of metal coils, there are claw-like knives that grip the ice. Luckily, as this is Central Oregon, your neighbor probably has some you can borrow.

3. Ice Skates

Normally, I wouldn’t recommend wearing ice skates to work. But when else can you do figure eights down the street? Plus, you can bodycheck people and blame it on the influence of your footwear.

And if you’re a bike commuter, might we recommend:

Practical and stylish.
