Ignore Westlund Bashing

Thank you for your editorial about State Senator Ben Westlund, Democratic Candidate for State Treasurer. I want to commend you for providing a balance

Thank you for your editorial about State Senator Ben Westlund, Democratic Candidate for State Treasurer. I want to commend you for providing a balance to The Bulletin's tired and, as usual, biased coverage.

I frequently work with politicians. The ones I like working with have four essential characteristics: integrity with honesty, approachability with good listening skills, life experiences, and compassion. I enjoy working with Ben Westlund for those reasons.

The Bulletin's recent coverage of Ben Westlund only confirmed my opinion of Ben - he has integrity and he is extremely honest. If he makes a mistake, he admits it! What I admire most about Ben is that if I ask his opinion, I know I always get a straight answer. He never gives me an answer I might want to hear unless it is the truth. I know that he will provide the same integrity and honesty as our State Treasurer no matter who he works with and he will expect that from all in his office.

It is my observation that Ben demonstrates excellent listening skills and he is approachable. He is quick to grasp essential facts and understand the issues. Ben listens and acts. For instance, he worked to reduce the interest rates for school bonds. Health care for all Oregonians is a priority for Ben; he worked across party lines to pass the Healthy Oregon Act and to make prescriptions affordable.

Ben has life experiences that help him understand the needs of others. He understands the needs of small businesses having had both unsuccessful and successful business ventures. He is committed to improving our business climate and getting our economy moving forward. I know he will champion infrastructure investments to create jobs, speed up the flow of transportation, increase interest in renewable energy, and encourage businesses to relocate to Oregon.

I know from experience that Ben has compassion for others. He is a strong advocate for consumers. He voted to protect Oregonians from identity theft, payday loan sharks, and subprime mortgage abuse. Ben expressed strong concern that all Oregonians need a safe and secure retirement.

In Oregon, we only pay slightly more than $1,500 per month in salary (no health coverage) for our State Senators and Representatives. Representing us in Salem is a full-time job. We got far more than we paid for in Ben Westlund! He has my vote for State Treasurer!
