For the last 10 years I've been suffering silently as people awkwardly tried to pronounce the year, since we crossed from the 1900s to the 2000s.

But the auto industry is leading a new linguistic trend that we all should embrace.

Do you remember how you say 1990?

It was Nineteen Ninety. But weirdly, when the year 2,000 arrived, we were forced to say "two thousand". Then in subsequent years we had equally awkward phrases like "two thousand three" or "two thousand nine".

Finally, Detroit is leading the charge to easier ways to communicate the year.

The "New Twenty Ten" vehicles are arriving in our local showrooms, and I for one am very glad to lose the cumbersome linguistic machinations of trying to combine 2 thousand with the first 9 years of the new century.

So welcome to "Twenty Ten", and the new models from Detroit. Remember, KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid: call it Twenty Ten and so forth from now on.
