The year 2020 has been a challenging one for many. Among communities of color, the increased attention around racial justice and police brutality has sometimes fostered solidarity—but also a heightened level of criticism, and sometimes even blame. The Dec. 7 event aims to uplift and foster a sense of unity among local people of color, focusing on how we can uplift, rather than attack, as we move forward and continue to tackle local issues—and how social media can be used as a positive vector, rather than a place for vitriol. The online forum will include an expert viewpoint from Dwaine Plaza, PhD, professor of sociology at Oregon State University, who will speak on cancel culture and its effects on people and communities.
