My, What Big Buns You Have!

Bad Wolf Bakery is all the better for eating and drinking downtown with you

Rosie Chensey

From the giant, hand-painted map of Bend covering the far wall, to locally-sourced coffee, ginger beer, bread, and booze, Bad Wolf Bakery and Bistro is a collection of what is most loved about Bend, as if the green "I Love Bend" bumper stickers had curated the newly opened downtown cafe. That's not to say Bad Wolf doesn't bring something special of its own. This family-owned store offers freshly baked pastries and cakes, signature cocktails made with house-infused liquors and fresh-squeezed juices, and house-made buttermilk biscuits and gravy, to name just a few.

"We want to be a hub for all things wonderful about Bend," said Kristie Dueber, who opened Bad Wolf with her husband Andrew and daughter Breezie in late November. "We use the best local sources for things we don't do in house."

Bad Wolf offers a robust breakfast and lunch menu with gluten free and vegan options (all available for take-out), an assortment of homemade baked goods, full espresso bar, happy hour specials, beer, and cocktails. Kombucha and small-batch ginger beer on tap, Village Baker and Big Ed's breads, Crater Lake vodka, Tillamook cheese, and a rotating roster of locally roasted coffee beans make for a truly authentic Bend experience. Bad Wolf even uses Ninkasi Vanilla Otis Stout in its gingerbread cake, because what's more "Bend" than using delicious craft beer in your baked goods? By the way, the gingerbread cake is delicious: moist, with a chewy, caramelized texture on the outside, packed with plenty of ginger punch and balanced with creamy, house-made egg nog whipped cream.

However, don't mistake the quaint, fairytale ambience for another "cute" little bakery. There's a reason the bistro is called Bad Wolf, and not Little Red Riding Hood. Happy hour kicks off at 2 pm daily and goes until 9 pm. Signature drinks include the Moscow Marmot, Bad Wolf's version of a Moscow mule, a Bloody Mary packed with veggies and topped with a bacon ribbon, and a hot toddy that's just stiff enough to warm you from the inside out. Small bites like mac and cheese croquettes and truffle pomme frites are perfect for sharing, or if you're craving something more substantial, you can opt for the popular ham and apple chutney grilled cheese, made with Village Baker Striata bread, or a bacon and braised kale sandwich served on a brioche roll.

Located on the corner of Wall and Newport, Bad Wolf Bakery and Bistro offers another great downtown option for any time of the day.
