New Music from The Besnard Lakes

TBL.jpg
In 2010 I named Canada's The Besnard Lakes' album The Besnard Lakes Are a Roaring Night one of the best albums of the year. To this day, that is still the album I think of when someone brings up shoegaze. And on their newest offereing, Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO, TBL stay true to that genre.

Songs are ethereal and detached from anything too weighty. On the albums's first track, "46 Satires," trance-like vocals nearly float away with the distorted guitar, but stay just within reach of the atmosphere thanks to pounding drums.

Throughout the record songs are more like an acid trip on that spaceship from Flight of the Navigator then the dark rock tracks TBL have been known for on their previous albums. And with every song over five minutes and some reaching closer to seven minutes long, the trip last for an impressive three quarters of an hour.

As with most shoegaze albums, Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO takes a few listens all the way through to truly appreciate the journey. But once you take the time, you'll be glad you did.
