No Fear Shakespeare

Kids' theater camp takes on A Midsummer Night's Dream

Though they be but little, they are fierce! Bend Experimental Art Theatre has rounded up a group of young actors, ages 6 to 18, and in a three-week intensive camp, put together a production of a Midsummer Night's Dream in original Shakespearean language. Impressive.

"These kids know are off book quicker than adult actors," said executive director and co-founder of B.E.A.T, Howard Schor. "A good 20 percent know the whole show. We have to tell them not to mouth other people's lines when they're onstage. Their learning ability is at the highest level."

Director David DaCosta went over the supernatural script line-by-line, making sure the aspiring thespians understood every element they are acting—from the escapades of the enchanted Athenian lovers in the woods to the play within a play. These kids now know Shakespeare better than most educated adults. Setting the play in the 1950s, DaCosta adds a fun twist. Oberon looks like Elvis and Titania is a ringer for Marilyn Monroe.

"The amazing thing is that a lot of people put our productions on par with other community theaters in Bend," said Schor. "These kids are quite remarkable."
