Today I read the official announcement of the opening of Trader Joe's on March 28. This exciting, quite longed for and overdue event is finally coming to Bend.

I have been a fan of Trader Joe for so many years that it dates me. I know there are many other fans chomping at the bit, hearing it discussed at the gym, in the grocery store, and almost any place people gather... "Have you heard yet when Trader Joe's is opening? Oh, you don't know about Trader Joe? Let me tell you"

Well now, like a much-heralded Santa Claus, he slips into town with his bag of groceries before the end of the month.

Wouldn't a nice welcome be in order from the Source, maybe a few quotes from enthusiastic fans? If you are interested you can start with the enclosed "love letter" sent to him last year at this same date. (Check it out.) Also, enclosed is the response from his office. Alas, the original Trader Joe wandered onto greener pastures, maybe with his old pal, "Cheap Chuck." But his legacy lives on right here in Bend and he'll develop a whole new group of devotees.

(Editors Note: While we've abandoned plans for a Trader Joe's commemorative issue, we're curious what the buzz is about and can't wait to fight with other glassy-eyed, gape-mouthed shoppers for a bottle of Two Buck Chuck)
