Old Mill District’s Tumalo Art Company Owner Receives Arts, Beautification & Culture Award from the City of Bend

16 June 2016 - Bend, Oregon – Susan Luckey Higdon, manager and owner of the Tumalo Art Company gallery in the Old Mill District, received an Arts, Beautification & Culture (ABC) Award from the City of Bend in May. The ABC award which honors three individuals, organizations and businesses yearly that have made significant contributions to the City's arts, culture, natural environment or public spaces is awarded by the ABC Commission.

Susan said, "It was such an honor to receive the ABC award from the City of Bend, and so meaningful because I was nominated by fellow artists. I am so proud of Tumalo Art Co., as it is much more than the beauty and quality of the art, it's about community here. Both among our artists and the people that we meet every day who come in and are touched by the artwork and the artists. I am continually enriched by being part of the culture of Bend."

Tumalo Art Co, a fine art collective, is owned and operated by local artists who are committed to bringing the best of Northwest art to patrons. The gallery features oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media artwork, as well as ceramics, glass, sculpture, photography, original hand-pulled prints, hand-turned wood and mosaic. There is also a selection of limited edition fine art reproductions, jewelry and cards.

Matt Schiffman, the Chair of the City's Arts, Beautification & Culture Commission, presented this year's ABC awards to: Susan Luckey Higdon, Tumalo Art Co.; Beth Basham, Youth Choir of Central Oregon; and Rochelle Rose-Schueler and Justyn Livingston, Wild Rose Artworks – ReStore at a Council meeting in May.

Tumalo Art Co. was started in 2001 and was originally housed in Tumalo, moving to Bend in the fall of 2004 when Susan Luckey Higdon and Tracy Leagjeld became the new principals. The gallery was first located near downtown and then moved in 2008 to its current location in the Old Mill District. About the Arts, Beautification and Culture Commission

Bend, Oregon’s Arts, Beautification and Culture Commission was created by the Bend City Council in January, 2002. The Council's purpose establishing this commission was to create an advisory commission to make recommendations on the appropriate role for the City of Bend to take in supporting Art, Beautification and Culture, to annually identify appropriate City involvement in arts, community beautification and culture with emphasis on community gatherings, events, cultural tourism and the arts. The Commission is composed of seven Bend citizens and appointed by the Mayor.
