Our Picks 11/26-12/4

thursday 27

Thanksgiving Races

RUNNING—The I Like Pie Run is the perfect excuse to eat another piece of pie. 9 am. Register at FootZoneBend.com. Starts at Crow's Feet Commons. $5 donation and five pounds of food for Neighbor Impact. For the more competitive, there is the annual Turkey Trot. Also a 9 am start. Register at Fleet Feet Sports, 1320 NW Galveston. Starting line: Les Schwab Amphitheater. $25.

friday 28

MUSIC/PARTY—Not only is it the second anniversary of one of Bend's most successful and community-oriented businesses, but the folks at Crow's Feet are bringing a real treat to their famed plaza—Austin folk, alt-country one-man-band and sock-knocking-off songwriter and performer Possessed by Paul James. Sawing away on his fiddle, stomping percussion and emanating hoot-and-holler energy, PBPJ is a perfect celebratory act. 5 pm. Crow's Feet Commons, 875 NW Brooks St. No cover.

friday 28

Pray for Snow

BEER—Not only the name of a nutty (as in taste, not personality) and medium stout beer, "Pray For Snow" is also an annual event. Disclaimer: This is not pure science, but more hopes and wishes. But the beer tastes as good each year. With music from Brothers Gow, Tony Smiley, and The Rum & The Sea. 5-9 pm. 10 Barrel parking lot, 1135 NW Galveston Ave. Free entry.

friday 28

Christmas Vacation

MOVIE—Although not the most clever holiday movie ever designed, unless you are some sort of humbug, Chevy Chase's slapstick is timelessly jolly. This 1989 installment of the National Lampoon's Vacation movies traded out Anthony Michael Hall, but gained then-newcomer Juliette Lewis as a Griswold. 7 pm. Tower Theater, 835 NW Wall. $12.

saturday 29

Tumbleweed Peepshow

MUSIC—The Belfry in Sisters is a charming venue, and hosts plenty of bluegrass and banjo-slapping bands traveling through Central Oregon. But the real treat is when it hosts locally-sourced music, like the trio Tumbleweed Peepshow. Joined by Portland-based Redwood Son, who describes his music as West Coast Americana, this line-up promises raw, soulful tunes that dig at the roots of rock. 8 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main Street. $5.

saturday 29

Christmas Tree Lighting

HOLIDAY—For traditionalists who refuse to celebrate Christmas until after Thanksgiving, the Christmas tree lighting at Drake Park marks the beginning of the season. Local choirs will perform holiday carols as Santa lights the tree. After the ceremony, good ol' St. Nick will be at the plaza on Franklin and Wall. 6 pm. Drake Park. Free.

sunday 30

Hip Hatchet

MUSIC—If you saw the man behind the solo project Hip Hatchet—Philippe Bronchtein—on the street, you'd probably figure him for a drifter, a farmer or maybe an eccentric professor. But from beneath the burly beard and flannel emerges a dynamic voice that moves effortlessly from gravelly and growling to honey-smooth and nimble. His fingers dance across his guitar strings as he spins poetry from his lips. 8 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

monday 1

Zachary Lucky

COUNTRY—Canadian country musician Zachary Lucky's songs are littered with secrets whispered in bed, Townes Van Zandt references, half-empty bottles of Jim Beam, and sounds that should be echoing from ancient vinyl under a stiff layer of dust. 8 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

wednesday 3

Final Pose

FILM—When Sisters yoga instructor Myra Lani Fisher was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2013, she chose to share her experiences coming to terms with her fears, attachments and relationships on film. The result—the award-winning documentary Final Pose—screens followed by a panel including representatives from Bend Ashtanga Yoga, Compassion & Choices, Final Pose and Partners in Care. 7 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St. $5 adv., $10 door.

wednesday 3

Rose's Pawn Shop

GRASS—Appalachian and Americana with a unique L.A. twang, Rose's Pawn Shop has a punky-pounding edge that traditional grass bands lack. Mass appealing pop-grass songs are shout-along instant classics that will stay stuck in your head without apology. 8 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $8-$10.
