Our Picks 12/18 - 12/26

wednesday 18

Red Chair Release Party

BEER—Celebrate the Northwest pale ale that's twice been dubbed "world's best beer" at the World Beer Awards. That's right, "world's best." Named for one of Mt. Bachelor's historic lifts, this perfectly balanced, hop-heavy brew is the mark of winter. Stop in and join the party. Santa will be there. 11 am-11 pm. Deschutes Brewery Public House, 1044 NW Bond St. No cover.

friday 20

Mark Ransom & The Mostest

MUSIC—Mark Ransom and the Mostest are a mainstay in Central Oregon's music scene, and the major players behind Bend's all-local Roots Music Festival. Essentially, they know anybody and everybody involved with music in Central Oregon. So expect this Solstice celebration to be a rocking party full of guest appearances and jam-laden collaborations. 8 pm. The Belfry, 302 E Main St. $10.

friday 20

Ugly Sweater Party

FUN—The best thing about an ugly sweater party is the thrift store search and the resulting joy that follows the ultimate find—a relic that looks like it was hand-stitched by your great aunt Myrtle. Or you can skip all that and buy a crappy holiday sweater at Target. Either way, put one on and get down to MoWo and Third Seven. 9 pm. Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave. Free.

friday 20

Home for the Holidays

CHRISTMAS—Christmas tradition, Central Oregon style with Victorian carolers from Central Oregon Mastersingers, the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," by Central Oregon School of Ballet, Central Oregon's favorite weather man, Bob Shaw, reading "Night Before Christmas," and a Santa sing-along. Family friendly and excruciatingly festive. 7 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $12.

saturday 21

Holiday Brewgrass Jamboree

MUSIC—A collection of festive holiday pickers, all under one roof! Stomp your feet to the twangy, down-home sounds of Wild Rye, Bend Uke Group, Bond St. Bluegrass Allstars and more. Drink and be merry—tis the season! 7:30 pm-11:30 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St., Sisters. Price: $12 and canned food for donation.

saturday 21

Brodie Stewart

MUSIC—The California born-and-bred country pop singer is best known for his 2011 hit, "Fine Looking Country Girl," a celebratory, sing-along party track filled with southern rock guitar riffs and lots of "Oh yeahs!" His Bend appearance should be no different. Bottom's up! 9 pm. Maverick's Country Bar and Grill, 20565 Brinson Blvd. $5.

saturday 21

Down North

FUNK ME—Although it may be tight in the room with the band members' egos (whose website likens them to Prince, and evokes references to James Brown and Jimi Hendrix), Down North's punk-funk music is a fun, romping jam, and may even have some of the wa-wah James Brown talent to back up their massive claims. 10 pm. Astro Lounge, 939 NW Bond St. $5.

sunday 22

Boxing Championships at Midtown

SPORT—You know who was a boxer? Nelson Mandela, that's who! When done right, it's more artful than brutal. See for yourself at this evening's event, the launching pad for regional championships. Make sure to check out defending state champion, 12-year-old Victor Bernabe, currently ranked seventh in the country in his 80-pound weight class! 6 pm. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $10.

sunday 22

The Train Man

MODEL TRAINS—The Train Man returns! An annual tradition at the Deschutes Public Library, the railroad-loving Michael Lavrich spends three days setting up his extensive model train collection with pieces dating back as early as the '20s, and over 400-feet of track. If you're between the ages of 3 and 300 you'll love this. Noon. Deschutes Public Library, 507 NW Wall St. Free.

wednesday 25

Christmas Movies!

FILM—Catching a Hollywood blockbuster is as much a Christmas tradition for many families as gingerbread cookies and mulled wine. This year's crop is particularly ripe: "Walking with Dinosaurs" is a 3-D extravaganza that nearly plops you in the Jurassic action, while the star-packed "The Wolf of Wall Street" is a Scorsese docu-drama with Leo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. Who better to spend the holidays with? Check movie times at BendSource.com/Bend/MovieTimes.
