Our Picks 5/15-5/21

thursday 15

Sandhill Crane film

SANDHILL CRANES—With a red crown and a wingspan like a pterodactyl, sandhill cranes are majestic birds. The Jane Goodall of water fowl, Gary Ivey has created a remarkable nature film, "Raising Kid Colt—A Story of a Young Sandhill Crane," that takes a front-row seat for the parenting and chick-raising behavior of one particular bird. 6:30 pm. Environmental Center, 16 NW Kansas Ave. Free.

friday 16

Solo Speak Sessions

STORIES—If you're sick of your interpersonal communication consisting of a Facebook feed, get grounded in reality with personal stories told in-person by Shay Knorr, Mike Ficher and more. The speakers perform under the title "Jump" (perhaps a story about the Van Halen song is in order?) in 15-minute intervals of practiced storytelling mastery. 7:30 pm. Greenwood Playhouse, 148 NW Greenwood Ave. $15-$18. (solospeak.com)

friday 16

Zonked Out Vibe Night

EDM—An epic lineup of local electronic spinners—Jay Tablet, Rory Oneders, DJ Harlo, Matt Wax and Royal Louis, Bend's anti-Euro club jammers—present what they call "dark" party music. Intriguing and totally danceable. 9 pm. Dojo, 852 NW Brooks St. Ladies, no cover. Guys, $3.

saturday 17

Chop Tops

ROCKABILLY— Pompadours, please. This Santa Cruz, Calif., band voices its love for all things hot-rod related, while dishing out a soldered-together batch of punk, country and surf. Hearing that slapped bass and watching this trio speed through its work might result in some desire to drag race. 9 pm. Volcanic Theater Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $8.

saturday 17

Hot Buttered Rum

NEWGRASS—Adopting the music sensibilities of Appalachia and applying a Northern California lyrical take on bluegrass has ingratiated this sextet to the granola set, while retaining enough grit and instrumental finesse to pull in old timers, too. Even in a venue the size of the Belfry, there'll surely be some two-stepping going on. 8 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St., Sisters. $18 advance. $22 at the door.

sunday 18

Harley Davidson Car & Bike Show

IRON HORSES—Harley Davidson is so distinct that the company copyrighted the guttural roar of its engines. Moreover, each Harley is its own story to tell—usually both about the hellbent for leather dude/dudette riding it, and the custom airbrush paint job, swooping handlebars or sloping seat. 11 am.–4 pm. Wildhorse Harley Davidson, 63028 Sherman Rd., Bend.

monday 19

We Have Spoken: Voices from Native America

CHOIR— The Central Oregon Mastersingers and the Central Oregon Symphony are drawn together to honor words spoken by Native Americans. Local composer and educator Clyde Thompson has composed this cantata, which is set to feature six area vocal soloists, and pulls stories from between the 15th and 20th centuries. 7:30 pm. Bend High, 230 NE 6th St. Free (register for tickets online at cosymphony.com).

wednesday 21

See More Seymour (Capote)

FILM—What is so remarkable about Philip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning performance as Truman Capote in the 2005 film Capote is how the massive actor seemingly shrinks in size and stature to the slight and fey size of the New York writer. The film is spellbinding, exploring the ethics of a writer exploiting two killers for his book, In Cold Blood. 7 pm. Old Stone, 157 NW Franklin. Free.

wednesday 21

Lisa Doll and the Rock 'n' Roll Romance

PUNK—If Joan Jett grew up in Baltimore and not on the west coast, she'd have been Lisa Doll. Doll's two-minute songs are all thwarted romance and updated bubble gum pop, delivered with a punky sneer. Her Neon Heat EP nearly clocks in at 10 minutes in length, but that's all the time she needs to get her point across. 8 pm. Volcanic Theater Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $8.

wednesday 21

Major Powers & the Lo-Fi Symphony

ROCK—Queen-like harmonies and hammering piano lines, (think the near-perfect interlude to "Bicycle") mixed with '90s pop-punk and a minor ska influence, Major Powers and the Lo-Fi Symphony are the power-trio dreams are made of. Based on their performance style and attire, we're guessing these guys were raised in a carnival tent. 7 pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St. Free.
