HIP-HOP—More than a year after Adam "MCA" Yauch's death, The Beastie Boys remain (arguably) the most relevant white rappers on the planet. Zoo Story
THEATER—Snappy dialogue, uncomfortable human interactions and lonely characters looking for real connections. Sound like a great episode of The Office? Nah. Even better: "The Zoo Story" is Edward Albee's first play. Written in 1958, it's a gripping, darkly funny one-act play about two strangers on a park bench. Aquadeer
MUSIC—Plugging in is overrated. Kick it with Aquadeer, progressive acoustic rockers from L.A. Aquadeer's four-part harmonies are reminiscent of '70s Talking Heads mixed with a little Violent Femmes, but they'd like to think their sound is more akin to that of Elliott Smith, whom they cite as an inspiration. Hopeless Jack & the Handsome Devil
ROCK OUT—Robert Johnson in the body of a tattooed punk-rock stud, front man, Hopeless Jack is always in the company of his bouncing drummer, Smilin' Pete (the Handsome Devil).
