Our Picks 5/29 - 6/6

wednesday 29

Know Beer: Boneyard

BEER— Listen in as Tony Lawrence, Boneyard Beer's brewmaster, explains how his brew got so damn good. This "Know Beer" series event highlights one of Bend's best breweries and includes tastings of its suds. Boneyard's RPM IPA might be the best India Pale Ale in town. How'd they do that? Find out here. 6 pm. 21+. Brooks Room, Deschutes Public Library, 507 NW Wall St.

thursday 30

Grand Royale

HIP-HOP—More than a year after Adam "MCA" Yauch's death, The Beastie Boys remain (arguably) the most relevant white rappers on the planet. Case in point: Grand Royale, an all-live, all-Beastie Boys cover band dedicated to playing all the hits, from "Fight for your Right" to "Sabotage" to "Intergalactic." 8:30 pm. Liquid Lounge, 70 NW Newport Ave. $7.

thursday 30

Zoo Story

THEATER—Snappy dialogue, uncomfortable human interactions and lonely characters looking for real connections. Sound like a great episode of The Office? Nah. Even better: "The Zoo Story" is Edward Albee's first play. Written in 1958, it's a gripping, darkly funny one-act play about two strangers on a park bench. Thursday-Saturday, through June 15, 7:30 pm, Volcanic Theatre Pub, $10.

friday 31

Aquadeer

MUSIC—Plugging in is overrated. Kick it with Aquadeer, progressive acoustic rockers from L.A. Aquadeer's four-part harmonies are reminiscent of '70s Talking Heads mixed with a little Violent Femmes, but they'd like to think their sound is more akin to that of Elliott Smith, whom they cite as an inspiration. Either way, they've got a good, mellow thing going. 8 pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.

saturday 1

Hopeless Jack & the Handsome Devil

ROCK OUT—Robert Johnson in the body of a tattooed punk-rock stud, front man, Hopeless Jack is always in the company of his bouncing drummer, Smilin' Pete (the Handsome Devil). After more than 100 shows on the road in 2012, the two are packing up the van again in promotion of their new EP, Don't Waste Your Time—No Money Here. Moondog Matinee opens. 8 pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.

saturday 1

Saturday Market

CRAFTS—Gather up the fam damnily and head out to the first Central Oregon Saturday market of the year, a showplace for local artisans. Jewelry, clothing, paintings, metal work—it's all here. Local music, too. Support your creative community members and take in some culture this weekend. 10 am-4 pm, corner of Kansas Avenue and Wall Street. Free.

sunday 2

Redwood Son

EASY LISTENING—Happy and bouncy, Redwood Son is a summertime tonic. Voted Best New Artist at the Portland Music Awards, the band is fronted by twangy vocals and steel string guitars, occasionally punctuated by bleating trumpets and sugar-honey backup singers. With lyrics as soothing and challenging as a Curious George book, Redwood Son is perfect for a lazy summer afternoon. 2:30 pm, Les Schwab Amphitheater. Free.

wednesday 5

Farmers Market

LOCAL FOOD—It's a week of firsts (see Saturday Market above). Celebrate summer at the year's first downtown Bend Farmers Market. Find colorful, responsibly grown local and regional veggies, fruits, meats, eggs and baked goods throughout the marketplace. Just remember to leave Fido at home—no dogs allowed. 3-7 pm. Brooks Street Alley, Downtown Bend. Free.

wednesday 5

Sisters Rodeo

YEE-HAW—Although the sport is dominated by Texans, homegrown Cody Campbell (Summerville, Ore.) currently sits in 11th place in the bull-riding world standings and is poised to break into the top 10. Yee-haw! Sisters Rodeo leaps into the summer season with bull riding tonight. Hold on to your ten-gallon hats! 6:30 pm, Sisters Rodeo Fairgrounds, 67637 Highway 20. $15.

thursday 6

The Americans

MUSIC—Eating a T-bone steak off the back of a bald eagle while firing a rifle is pretty American, but so are power-pop rock-and-roll songs. The leader of this L.A. band sounds like a younger, blues-ier Bruce Springsteen. And what's more American than The Boss? Nothing, that's what. All ages. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St. 7 pm. Free.
