Our Picks 8/7-8/14

thursday 7

Shook Twins

MUSIC—Too sexy and smirky-snarky to be earnest folk singers, and too cute and full of sunshine for a full-court press of Goth music, the Shook Twins are crafting their own style—compositions with warbling guitars, plucky banjos and increasingly complex harmonization. Second to last Munch and Music for the season. 5:30 pm. Drake Park. Free.

friday 8

The Princess Bride

MOVIE—One of the most quotable films of all time, cult-classic fairy tale The Princess Bride is screening as part of the second annual Sunriver Twilight Cinema series. If you haven't seen the film (inconceivable!), that changes now. Or not. As you wiiiiiiish! (But really, how can you go wrong with a giant, a six-fingered man, and Rodents of Unusual Size?) 8:30 pm. SHARC, 57250 Overlook Rd, Sunriver. Free.

saturday 9

Flashback Cruz

CARS—Ever miss the days of cruising for tail in your dad's 1950 T-Bird with the leather bench seats? Whether you partook, or were the product of those slow-rolling American mating rituals, everyone can enjoy looking at some shiny, old, classic cars and dragsters screaming the wrong way down Wall Street. 6 pm. Downtown. Free.

saturday 9

Old Maid and the Thief

OPERA—OperaBend presents Gian Carlo Menotti's comic, one-act masterpiece about a mysterious stranger and his affect on three catty, small-town women. More dramatic than reality television, Old Maid and the Thief will be performed by the Cascadia Concert Opera based in Eugene. 3 pm & 7 pm. Pickney Performing Arts Center, 2600 NW College Way. Free, donations welcome.

saturday 9

Show Us Your Spokes

MUSIC—Even if you plug your ears, it's nearly impossible not to feed off of the rambunctious energy of Portland's Hopeless Jack and the Handsome Devil. However, we strongly advise you to leave your ear-holes open and absorb the authentic blues of Jack Beisel's guttural slide-guitar licks and gravel-coated vocals matched with Peter Thomas' jungle beats. 7 pm. Parrilla Grill, 635 NW 14th St. $5.

saturday 9

Elton John cover band

TRIBUTE—In 1977, Elton John pulled a Michael Jordan and announced he was retiring at the top of his game—which would have been fine. The 1970s were Elton John's best work—fun, smart, catchy ditties—and this is the period of time that Kenny Metcalf, Elton John impersonator extraordinaire, pulls from. 8 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall. $25.

sunday 10

Oregon Observatory at Sunriver

ASTRONOMY—With 11 telescopes trained on the summer skies, the annual Perseid Shower racing across the night, and a full August moon, do you really need more reasons to take up star gazing? 9-11 pm. Oregon Observatory, 57245 River Rd, Sunriver. $8 adults; $6 children ages 2-12.

sunday 10

Know Local Authors

WORDS—As part of its Second Sunday series, the Deschutes Public Library presents Central Oregon writers for a meet-and-greet. Among the local literary luminaries are Dave Edlund (author of alternative energy thriller "Crossing Savage"), Sisters poet Marean Jordan, and award-winning children's author Kai Strand. Authors will read from and discuss their books, which will also be available for purchase. 2 pm. Downtown Bend Library, 610 NW Wall St. Free.

monday 11

The Him & Her Tour

COMEDY—With a saucy mouth and racy jokes, Barbara Gray sets a conversationally hilarious tone. In the Him & Her Tour, Gray is joined in frank tone and naughtiness by fellow comedian Dave Ross and his keen observations about the everyday. Presented by Bend Comedy. 8 pm. Summit Saloon, 125 NW Oregon. $8 adv., $10 door.

tuesday 12

Dirty Bourbon River Show

BRASS—The self-described "New Orleans Gypsy Brass Circus Rock" band ('cause we live in a post-single adjective musical world) combines serious musical chops with a playful attitude—no doubt honed through its six-month burlesque residency. Dirty Bourbon River Show is the kind of band you'd want leading your funeral procession. (Who says the dead can't dance?) 8 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.
