Our Picks for 12/30 - 1/7: New Year's Eve, The Rose Bowl, The Dirty Words and more

What to do in Central Oregon the week of 12/30 - 1/7.

New Year's Eve Music

thursday 31

Even more so than past years, this New Year's Eve offers up an enormous helping of mostly free music events. We have them catalogued for you (as we also did in last week's issue) in the On Stage column that can be found in the Sound section of the paper. Choose something that fits your fancy.

New Year's Party with Diggabeatz

thursday 31

We got late word of this party, which is one of the only 18 and over offerings to be found on the entire NYE slate. This is looking to be a hell of a dance party with a gaggle of DJs, including Utah-based Diggabeatz, as well as a host of local notable acts like Harlo, Rada, Cloaked Characters and many, many others. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $12 or $10/with two cans of food. 18 and over, bar with ID.

New Year's Buck & Ball

thursday 31

Once again the Buck & Ball is returning to the Expo Center for a mutli-faceted night that allows you to take in both rodeo and dancing in one magical night. Music is provided by local country act Countryfied, who will be joined by former Making the Band star and member of Danity Kane, Shannon Bex. All ages. Kids under 10 free. $15/adv, $20/door. 7:30pm-2am. Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center

New Year's Eve Benefit
for Feed the Hungry

thursday 31

Guess what? You can send 2009 out in style while also helping the hungry at this benefit party out at the Bend Community Center. This buffet dinner features music from Jumpin' Joyce Respass and improvisational comedy from Bend's own troupe, Triage. And yes, there is a bar there. Don't worry. $50/person (21+). Call 330-6061 for ticket info. 7pm Thursday, Dec 31. Bend Community Center, 1036 NE 5th St.

The Rose Bowl

friday 1

This is arguably the biggest game in history of University of Oregon football as the Ducks take on the Ohio State University Buckeyes down in Pasadena. Pretty much every bar in town will be showing the game on a big screen, or you can curl up on the couch with a bloody Mary. But if you want to really venture out, the Pine Theater out in Prineville (216 Main St., Prineville) where you can get lunch, a drink and see the game on the big screen for $10.

Hangover 10k Fun Run

friday 1

New Year's morning can be a brutal one... as in one when you need to open your eyes one at a time. But that's not exactly the best way to spend the first waking moments of a new decade, now is it? Instead, get yourself out of the sack and into your running gear for this race, which is described as "10k-ish." Nothing shakes off a hangover like a brisk run, now does it? The race costs only $5, which is a donation to the Mt. Bachelor Rotary Club. Contact 389-1601 for more info. 10am. Fleet Feet Sports, 1320 NW Galveston Ave.

The Dirty Words

saturday 2

The last time we sent you out to a Dirty Words show, it was an acoustic gig that was ultimately canceled due to illness. This show is a full rock concert and it won't be canceled. We promise you'll be able to hear the dynamic sounds of this local indie rock ensemble. And if you're a fan of dudes punching each other in the face, you can come early and watch the UFC fights that precede the show. 10pm-11:30pm. Mountain's Edge Bar 61131 S Hwy 97.

Sleep, B. Dolan, Cecil Otter,
Rocket 1

saturday 2

This freight train of hip-hop rolls into town for a pair of shows featuring some big names in the indie rap world. The first one is an in-store performance at downtown Bend's Showcase Hats & Apparel at 4pm then the crew takes a bit of a break before reappearing at the Bendistillery Martini Bar at 9pm. Take some time and cruise through the MySpace pages of these acts - if you're a hip-hop head, you'll like what you hear.

Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Jam

sunday 3

So with it being 2010, we've officially entered the future. But that doesn't mean you can't get old timey when needed. That's what you and the family will do at this fiddle-friendly outing. It's free, too. But you can donate to the cause if you'd like. 12:30pm-3:30pm. Pine Forest Grange Hall, 63214 Boyd Acres Road.

Brent Alan and His Funky Friends

wednesday 6

It seems that the Funky Friends are hard to find come winter, but this show brings them back out to the public. Known for a rotating lineup but a steady arsenal of rock and funk hits, Brent Alan's band is always a go to for a fun night out. Good to see the free McMenies shows firing back up! Free, all ages. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.
