Our Picks for 2/16 - 2/24: Y La Bamba, Bend WinterFest, Golden Gloves Championship, Zwicklemania and more

What to do in Central Oregon the week of February 16-24, 2011.

Y La Bamba

wednesday 16

One of the bloggers over on our brand-cranking-new Bent blog has been raving about this show for a while now and we have to agree, this is a really excellent band. Cramming seven members onto the stage, this Portland act manages to weave a few Mexican influences and numbers into its incredibly smooth indie folk sound. Think of a slightly spicier Blind Pilot and you've got this band. Free. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School

Lovely, Still

thursday 17

BendFilm is presenting this extremely well-received film out at the Sisters Movie House. Yeah, we're aware that we told you the director would be at this screening of Lovely Still, but we were wrong. Turns out we just hoped he'd be there, as you should be on Thursday night for a film you're not soon going to forget. $10. 7pm Thursday, Feb 17. Sisters Movie House, 720 Desperado Ct.

WinterFringe

thursday

Do you ever find yourself saying, "Gee wiz, I really wish WinterFest was just one day longer" or something along those lines? If so, you'll enjoy this addition to the 2011 festival, featuring fire dancers and other performers in downtown Bend... all for free. Then, you can head over to the Century Center where Mosley Wotta and Larry and His Flask co-headline a show at 9 p.m. (WinterFest button required for entrance. $6/advance, $7/door. 21 and up.)

Bend WinterFest

friday-sunday 18-20

It snowed this week, hence it's still winter, and thus it's most apt that we would be celebrating WinterFest this weekend. For all the goings on - from ice carving and snowboarding to live music - check out the guide in the middle of this issue. Old Mill District all weekend.

Oregon State Golden Gloves Championship

friday-saturday 18-19

Boxing in Bend? For real? We've had a steady diet of mixed martial arts roll through Central Oregon over the years and now we've got some real live boxing at the Midtown this weekend with the historic Oregon State Golden Glove Championships. Here, you'll see some of the best fighters in the entire state - as well as the Everlast Girls, raffle prizes and other fun stuff. Beer garden for 21 and up. Friday - $10, $20/ringside. Saturday - $15, $25/ringside. 7pm both nights. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Be Fierce: The Drag Show

saturday 19

To support the Central Oregon chapter of the Gay Straight Alliance, Seven hosts this drag show, which is followed by a DJ set. All proceeds go to the GSA, of course. 7pm-2:30am. $8/adv, $10/door. Seven Nightclub, 1033 NW Bond St.

Zwickelmania

saturday 19

This weekend marks one of the biggest times for beer fans in Oregon with Zwickelmania, a statewide event that opens up the doors of our local breweries for tours, talks with the brewers and more. All Central Oregon breweries are participating on Saturday, so you don't have much of an excuse for not getting out there and checking out your local beers. 11am-4pm.

Dead Man Walking Lecture with Sister Helen Prejean

thursday 24

Sister Helen Prejean, the woman who's life served as the foundation for the book and film Dead Man Walking, one of the most inspiring pieces of art in opposition of the death penalty, is coming to Central Oregon. Make it to either the Redmond or Bend appearances and take a listen to her amazing story. 1pm, Redmond Public Library, 827 SW Deschutes Ave, Redmond. 6:30pm, Pinckney Center on the COCC campus, 2600 NW College Way.

Mark Random & The Mostest, Brooks Robertson

thursday 24

A few days ago, Mark Ransom gave us a call and told us that he had a show coming up. But he didn't want to talk about his own jammy band, but rather his opening act, Brooks Robertson, a young Portland finger-style guitarists who Ransom calls one of the best he's ever heard. Not a bad recommendation, especially coming from the headliner of the show. $5. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Long Beach Rehab

thursday 24

This reggae and dub act features members of Bad Brains and LBC Sublime and are sure to provide some warm Southern California vibes to thaw you out on a winter night. Audiolized and Medium Troy open. $20. 8pm. The Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.
