Our Picks for 4/13 - 4/21: Yonder Mountain String Band, Andre Nickatina, Spring Festival, Paleface and More

The Source Weekly's Picks for what to do in Central Oregon this week.e

Yonder Mountain String Band

wednesday 13

If you got a copy of the paper fresh off the press today and have an empty evening, might we suggest you run immediately to the Midtown Ballroom and see one of the finest acts in all of bluegrass? The Colorado band is back in town, as they're known to do around here in the springtime, just in time for all the hula-hooping folks to get their groove on. Sorry if that was too hippie for you, but seriously, this show will be a twangy rocking good time. All ages. $20/adv, $25/door. 9pm. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Andre Nickatina

saturday 16

Appearing in Bend for the 274th time in the past decade is Bay Area rap legend Andre Nickatina. Just kidding, he hasn't really come that many times, but judging from the size of his loyal fan base here in town, it seems like he might be able to roll through that many times. This show features a solid opening lineup, including Mumbls, Endr Won, Maintain & Logy B. All ages. $23/adv, $28/door. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

NW Crossing Spring Festival

saturday-sunday 15-16

The weather might make you think it's still February, but we're nearly a month into spring, so it's quite apt that the Northwest Crossing Spring Festival would be this weekend. The music lineup, as well all the other events, including plenty of kid stuff, looks awesome enough to bring out folks no matter what the weather turns out like. Far and away, the highlight is a familiar tag-team local lineup on Saturday night that pairs the hardcore honkytonk and Americana of Larry and His Flask (6:30pm) with the hip-hop of Mosley Wotta (8:30pm). Things are a bit mellower on Sunday, with Five Pint Mary at noon, Hilst and Coffey at 1:30 and Blackstrap closing down the festival at 3pm. NorthWest Crossing Neighborhood. See guide in this issue for more details.

Gregory Alan Isakov

saturday 16

This singer-songwriter and his golden pipes make a return appearance after playing an impressive opening gig for Brandi Carlile a few years back. This PoetHouse show features his full band - read more about it in the Sound section. $10/adv on bendticket.com, $12/door. 21 and up. Majority of the proceeds benefit the PoetHouse. 9pm. PoetHouse Art, 856 NW Bond St. Enter on Minnesota Ave.

Luau to Benefit
Feedin' the People

sunday 17

Feedin' the People is a relatively new nonprofit organization in Bend that helps to, as its name implies, give food to people who need it. They're in the process of starting a community farm in town and this authentic luau buffet will help them generate the needed funds. Enjoy the Hawaiian tunes of Bill Keale as you grub out. $25. 5pm-9pm Sunday, Apr 17. Common Table, 150 NW Oregon Ave.

My Own Two Hands
Art Stroll & Chili Feed

friday-saturday 15-16

For a full look at the Americana Project's My Own Two Hands, see this week's Culture section and learn about all the fun and art to be had out in Sisters on Friday and Saturday. Downtown Sisters.

Tatjana Soli

friday and saturday, 15 and 16

This New York Times bestselling author penned the much-lauded and critically acclaimed novel, The Lotus Eaters, a historically based novel about three photographers who find themselves surrounded by the Vietnam War in the final days before the fall of Saigon. Soli, a native of Austria now living in California, will be on hand for two special appearances in Central Oregon to read from, discuss and sign copies of the novel. See her at 5pm Friday at Paulina Springs Books, 252 W Hood Avenue, in Sisters and at a luncheon catered by Pho Viet ($35) on Saturday at Between the Covers, 645 NW Delaware Avenue, in Bend at 11:30am.

wednesday 20

The McMenamins empire gives us yet another delightful gift of free music in the form of Paleface, a North Carolina-based dusty Americana rock duo that is playing the company's Great Northwest Tour and thankfully making a stop in Bend. Paleface is kind of a like a co-ed Avett Brothers, given that it's made up of guitarist/vocalist and namesake Paleface and his girlfriend/drummer, Monica "Mo" Samalot, and the two play awesome high-energy alterna-folk. Go to the show, you'll see what I'm talking about. Free. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

The Grateful Dead Movie Event

wednesday 20

Given that there are, by our latest tally, roughly 25,000 Grateful Dead fans in Bend, it's a safe bet to say that this screening of a one-night-only concert documentary following the band back in its '70s heyday will be well attended. Take a long, strange trip down to the Old Mill and relive the greatness of one of our nation's greatest rock and roll bands. 7:30pm Wednesday, Apr 20. Old Mill Stadium 16, 680 SW Powerhouse Dr.

G. Love & Special Sauce,
Belle Brigade

thursday 20

Remember the last time G. Love came to town and just about everyone showed up and had a grand ol' time in a super-packed Domino Room? Yeah, 'twas pretty sweet. Now, Garret Dutton, whoops... we mean G. Love, is coming back with his funky hip-hop-meets-blues-rock sound and hopefully playing some of the tasty tracks by his new Avett Brothers-produced album, Fixin' To Die. $20/adv, $25/door. All ages. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.
