Our Picks for 5/5 - 5/13: Last Band Standing, Central Oregon Hot Shots, First Friday, Casey Naill & The Norway Rats

What to do in Central Oregon the week of May 5, 2010.

Last Band Standing

thursday 6

The local battle of the bands rages on this week with a rock-dominated lineup including Jones Road, Shades of Society, Tuck and Roll, Kousefly and Elliot. Come out and support one of these bands if you're a fan - or just come for the $2 Ninkasi beers. $5/door. 8pm. Boondock's Bar and Grill, 70 NW Newport Ave.

Underscore Orkestra

thursday 6

Weird? Absolutely. Sloppy? Kind of. Interesting as hell? Nailed it. That's probably the best way to describe this Portland acoustic outfit that plays in a style that's essentially from back in time with a mix of Klezmer, Balkan, gypsy jazz and swing tunes. $5. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Central Oregon Hot Shots

friday 7 and saturday 8

If you live in Bend, you're probably starved to see some live basketball, which is why you should head up to the fairgrounds where the Central Oregon Hotshots - our very own International Basketball League team - will be playing a pair of games this weekend. With an abbreviated shot clock and an emphasis on up-tempo play, IBL games typically feature outrageously high scores, with the Hotshots averaging more than 120 points a game so far - so yeah, you get to see the ball fall through hoop with intense frequency. 7:15pm both nights, Hooker Creek Events Center, 3800 SW Airport Way, Redmond.

First Friday

friday 7

This is just your friendly monthly reminder to get out on the streets of downtown, the Old Mill and Northwest Crossing to gaze upon the works of local and regional artists. Hit up last week's Arts On supplement for complete gallery listings. Begins at 5pm.

Acorn Project

friday 7

All right, so we're pretty sure this was the band playing in the parking lot at the Phish shows last August. Either way, if you're a fan of the jammier side of rock and roll, you should give this Bellingham band a chance to make you dance and/or stare at the ceiling, depending on the song. $8. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons

saturday 8

When Jerry and the Jackmormons, his longstanding rock trio, are firing on all cylinders, you'd be hard pressed to find another act that is this grittily awesome. Read this week's Sound feature for more. $12/door. 21+. 9:30pm. The Annex, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Indie Reels: Brian

sunday 9, monday 10

BendFilm has revived its Indie Reels series and for May the festival is showing Brian, which won the Audience Award at the 2009 event. The film follows Brian, a Bend native who spent 16 years battling cancer before eventually passing away, but never let the illness get in the way of his love of cycling. Sunday, Sisters Movie House, 720 Desperado Ct. Monday, McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St. $8/GA, $6/BendFilm members.

2010 WebCyclery Chainbreaker Mountain Bike Race

sunday 9

They don't call it the Chainbreaker for nothing, but don't let the name scare you off. This is actually one of the biggest mountain bike races in the entire state, taking place just west of town off of Shevlin Park Road. To learn more about breaking (or not breaking) your chain, click on over to www.webcyclery.com. 10am.

Casey Neill & The Norway Rats

wednesday 12

The free Wednesday show at McMenamins welcomes back a frequent flyer with a show by Portland Americana rockers, Casey Neill & The Norway Rats. The band features an array of well-known Portland players, including, on occasion, The Decemberists' Jenny Conlee, and is known to get the room moving by way of Neill's expertly crafted and often Irish-inspired songs. Free, all ages. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas

thursday 13

It's difficult to separate the term "Scottish fiddle" from Alasdair Fraser, so we won't even try, but we will let you know about his Tower Theatre show next week in which he's joined by cello wunderkind Natalie Haas. Together, the two create comforting, multi-layered classical sounds. $20, $25. 7pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.
