Our Picks for 9/23 - 10/1: DJ Barisone, Pepper, Bend Roots Revival

Our picks for this week.

Finn Riggins, Church

thursday 24

This was in the Picks last week, but since we got our hands on Finn Riggins' new album, Vs. Wilderness, we have to write more about this Boise, Idaho trio given that said album is incredibly awesome. See this show if you like awesomely wacky indie rock. $5. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood.

Top Shelf, Mosley Wotta,
Cloaked Characters, DJ Hit N Run

thursday 24

Suped up hip-hop takes over the Boondocks stage for this show featuring some of the best names in the local game. Keep an ear out for collaborations a plenty at this completely free show. 9pm. Boondocks Bar and Grill, 70 NW Newport Ave.

Heavy Metal Mania

thursday 24

There are times when the Central Oregon metal scene bands together for a show so massive that it can't be ignored and this is one of those times. The large confines of the Underground goes completely metal with a lineup that includes Almost Nothing, Booze Devil, Embrace the Dusk and Wache the Dead. 8pm. The Underground Club, 2221 NE 3rd St.

Bend Roots Revival

thursday 24-sunday 27

Turn to the Sound page for a list of ridiculous answers to even more ridiculous questions about the largest local music event of the year. It's as cool as it sounds. Go to bendroots.net for the complete four-day schedule. Parrilla Grill and Victorian Café, corner of 14th St. and Galveston Ave.

DJ Barisone Goodbye Show

friday 25

Just last month, Source readers voted Bryan Barisone "Best DJ" in our annual Best of Central Oregon issue, a distinction he's definitely earned. Some may know Barisone as the original DJ for local hip-hoppers Person People and others know him better as a party purveyor who could be seen on many a weekend in the Martini Bar or elsewhere pumping his trademark jams. But now, Barisone is leaving town and heading to Portland to pursue his DJ career, but not before he plays this last show. Best of luck, Bryan! 9:30pm, Bendistillery, 850 NW Brooks St.

Oktoberfest

friday-saturday 25-26

Beer, beer, beer, wiener dog races, crazy music, beer, beer, beer, super tasty German food you're not going to find anywhere else, kids stuff, beer, beer, the chicken dance, men in lederhosen, beer, a lot of your neighbors, beer, and more! The Downtowners again put on this annual celebration of Bavarian fun with two full nights of festivities. And there will be local beers on tap... looks like we forgot to mention that. 6pm-10pm both nights. Minnesota Ave, downtown.

Josh Martinez

saturday 26

While Bend Roots might be dominating the musical headlines for this weekend, Saturday night features a nice nightcap to the festivities with a high-profile hip-hop show in the form of an appearance by Canadian turned Portlander, Josh Martinez. Often tossed into the "indie" hip-hop category, Martinez - known to his fans by the delightfully populist moniker "People's Champ" - is actually quite classical (as in classically hip-hop) in his approach to rap music, oftentimes giving tribute to days past with De La Soul type riffs. Mindscape and Mosley Wotta open. All ages. $10. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Problem Stick and the Dirty Words

saturday 26

It's a full-on rock and roll hurricane - or at the very least tropical storm when these two acts share the stage. If for no other reason, see this show because the poster featured dolls riding space scooters. Seriously, it did. No cover. 10pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.

Yard Dogs Road Show

wednesday 30

Flip to the On Stage column to learn more about one of the most ridiculously awesome (and ridiculously eclectic) live shows out there. It's a full on hobo-inspired jamboree, with costumes, horn sections and more. $20/adv, $25/door. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Pepper

thursday 1

Not very many bands could make a hit out of a song with lyrics that feature the line: "Why don't you have some dirty hot sex with me?/ It's ain't like I'm asking you to give it up for free." But Pepper did just that! They used those lines to make "Dirty Hot" a huge hit, making the Hawaiian punk/reggae rockers a standout in the music scene. But the band has also done well outside that hit, creating a strong and loyal legion of fans on the islands and here on the mainland with their brand of head bobbing surf jams. Opening the show are Iration and Ill Scarlett. $18/adv, $20/door. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

The Clumsy Lovers

thursday 1

We once saw this band at a mountain resort in Idaho and gave a giant thumbs up when the band played a cover of the Beatles' "I've Just Seen a Face." Oh, and later in the show, the fiddle player of this Celtic-influenced bluegrassy act got up on a table in the bar and went nuts. The Canadian act is still out on the road most of the year and recently celebrated the release of its new disc, Make Yourself Known. $10. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.
