Our Picks for the Week of 2/11-2/19

Bend Poetry Slam
wednesday 11

It's been a while since we sent you to the Poetry Slam, so if you got your mitts on the paper a bit early this week, head over to the Silver Moon and check out this monthly battle of intellect and wit. Could be a good start to your night before crossing the street to the Annex for the Pimps of Joytime show. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Get Yours with DJs Ali-Sun and Moksha
friday 13

Remember the sweet-ass Hi-Top sessions at the Grove back in the day? Well the co-star of that dance party, DJ Ali-Sun, is making her return to the wheels of steel by joining DJ Moksha for a night of "crunk-tastica." For this show, however, Moksha will be going by "LaShawn" and Ali-Sun will be "BabyLove" as they preside over a costume party hosted by Mr. Gone. Prizes for best dressed! 10pm. Downtown Martini Bar, 850 NW Brooks St.

American Nobody
friday 13

We started to tell you about this guy on last week's Our Picks page, but we'd like to dish a little more info about this Portland one-man band that smashes up influences ranging from indie rock to Americana for a dynamically innovative show. If you miss this show at the Moon, you can catch him up on the mountain at the Clearing Rock Bar on Saturday. 8pm, Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

WinterFest
friday-sun 13-15

It's three days of music, winter sports, ice carving and all sorts of cold-weather goodness when Winterfest makes its first-ever appearance in the Old Mill. Aside from a sweet musical lineup all weekend (see the Sound page) there's also one of the biggest rail jams in the region featuring a sweet array of local riders (see the Outdoors page). Slap on your beanie and get down there. All weekend. The Old Mill District.

Age, Sex, Location
saturday 14

Be one of the first to take a look at "Age, Sex, Location," a short film written and directed by Brad Lockwood and edited by Jonathan Fessler. We got a sneak peak at this film, a darkly humorous look into the world of Internet dating shot entirely in Bend using a local cast, and definitely got a kick at how the filmmakers used our fair city to represent towns like St. Louis and Boulder, CO. This premiere party is a benefit for two local filmmakers, Fessler (who is shooting in Nepal) and Vanessa Shulz (read about her documentary project to be shot in Chile in the Culture section) and features sweet indie rock sounds from Portland bands Dinner Pelonca and Lions & Eagles. 7pm Saturday, Feb 14. PoetHouse Art, 55 Minnesota Ave. Donations appreciated.

Geographer
sunday 15

Read about this San Francisco band's wide scope of indie rock capabilities in the On Stage column. 8pm, Silver Moon Brewing Co, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Tim Reynolds & TR3
tuesday 17

Dave Matthews right hand man makes a return visit to Bend. Read all about him and his trio in the Sound section. 9pm. $16/adv, $18/door. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Lynx and Jamie Janover, Heyoka and SAQi
wednesday 18

A lot of people were amped up about this show when it was slated for the Silver Moon a few months ago, but the appearance was unfortunately cancelled due to a family emergency. But sweet sassy molassy, the show is coming back to Bend, this time at the Old Mill Martini Bar where you can see Lynx's unique brand of folktronica collide with Janover's Burning Man-esque showmanship. 9pm. $7. Old Mill Martini Bar, 680 SW Powerhouse Dr.

Pete Kartsounes
wednesday 18

Some probably remember Kartsounes for playing in Bend along with his band previously as well as the dude behind Hike 4 Cancer. Each summer, Kartsounes hikes through Colorado playing shows and raising cash and awareness for kids with cancer. As for his tunes, they range from bluegrass to jazz with all these styles tied together by strong narratives in his lyrics. 8pm, Silver Moon Brewing Co, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Graves, Gajah, Cloaked Characters, DJ Mud
thursday 19

This show brings together some stellar MCs in Seattle's Graves and LA's Gajah for some mastery of the microphone. Also on the bill are local hip-hop pioneers Cloaked Characters and DJ Mud, most recently of Mosley Wotta fame. Free. The Summit Saloon and Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.
