Our Picks for the Week of 5/29-6/4

The Confederats, Hands on Throat, No Cash Value

friday 30

We want the punk, gotta have that punk! If you go to one punk show this week, make it this one. PDX's Confederats finally make it back over and rock out like Ringo: with some help from their friends (HoT and No Cash Value). A good dose of punk might do you some good, so get in a slam dance and call us in the morning. 8pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.

Sweet Charity

thursday-sunday 29-1

It's time you supported local theater, rather than heading to the megaplex to see Indiana Jones for the fifth time this week. This award-winning Neil Simon musical centers on Charity Hope Valentine, a dancin' girl who keeps falling for the wrong guy. Sounds juicy. 8pm Wednesdays-Saturdays, 3pm Sundays, May 29-June 28. Wednesday, Jun 4. 2nd Street Theater, 220 NE Lafayette Ave. 312-9626. $21, $18/students & seniors (62 & up).

Donna Jean & the Tricksters

thursday 29

See this week's profile in the Sound section and learn everything this Grateful Dead alumnus has to say about her new(ish) band. Tickets at Ranch Records and TicketsWest. 8:30pm doors, 9:30pm showtime. $15, $13/advance. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Basin & Range

saturday 31

This pick is not recommendation that you observe a topographical feature characterized by a series of separate and parallel mountain ranges with broad valleys interposed, extending over a more or less wide area (thank you Wikipedia!) This is actually a super jazzy instrumental funk troupe hailing from Eugene. Think of them as Medeski Martin and Wood, but with some horns! Dancing shoes recommended, but not required. 8pm. $3. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Element 57

saturday 31

This band boldly calls themselves "A modern day version of the Police on steroids." Since the Police are reunited, wouldn't a modern day version of the Police be...the Police? And as for the steroids, the Police are already on steroids. How else could Stewart Copeland drum like that...unless he's a robot, hmm. Inaccurate comparisons aside, Element 57 is a solid rock act and is sure to bring some much needed rock to the reggae intensive confines of the Summit. 9:30pm. $5. Summit Saloon and Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.

Central Oregon Hotshots

friday-saturday 30-31

You probably read the massive account in this week's issue of our local pro basketball team and now you're ready to go see them score a good 130 points or so (not guaranteed...they might only drop in 120). Friday night they take on the Grand Rapids Flight and on Saturday, they battle the Tacoma Jazz in fan favorite Arthur Lewis, Jr.'s final game as a Hotshot. Boom shakalaka! 7:15pm both nights, Mountain View High School, 2755 NE 27th St.

Smokin' Ashes vs. Emerald City Roller Girls

saturday 31

Those pesky Lava City Roller Dolls' own Smokin' Ashes look to roll over the Emerald City Roller Girls in this sweetly brutal match of Oregon roller derby power houses. After you watch some chicas pounce each other, you can hit up the after party at the 541 Lounge. Advance tickets at LavaCityRollerDolls.com or the D&D Bar & Grill. Doors 5pm, match 6pm. Match is at the Central Oregon Indoor Sports Center, 20795 High Desert Ln. $12, $6/seniors and kids under 13, $10/advance.

Sergei Khrushchev

tuesday 3

Take it easy, it's not like this guy is going to take off his shoe and slam it on the table. This author, NPR commentator, former USSR missile engineer and son of Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, stops in little old Bend to offer perspective on Russia's future and its changing role in global politics. Doors 6pm, presentation/discussion 7pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. 317-0700. $25/premier reserved (includes post-event reception); $15/general reserved.

Alfred Howard and The K23 Orchestra

wednesday 4

San Diego-spawned psychedelic funk rock mixed with some spoken word prowess. Please guide your nimble fingers to the Sound section and look for the Liner Notes box to learn more about this jazzy-fat-nastiness. 8pm, Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.
