Out of Town 10/9 - 10/17

thursday 10

Tim Kasher

One of Connor Oberst's cohorts from Omaha, Neb., Tim Kasher is the front man of Cursive and The Good Life, both longtime Saddle Creek recording groups. Kasher's style is Pavement-esque pop rock that ranges from emotional waltzes about feeling dejected to aggressive and discordant hate rock—both extremes are rumored to be inspired by a messy divorce. Effervescent punk sweetheart Laura Stevenson, who sings backup on Kasher's newest album Adult Film, opens the show. 9 pm. Doug Fir Lounge. $12.

Bonnie Raitt

At 63, Bonnie Raitt looks better in skinny jeans with a Gibson Les Paul slung over her shoulder than most 20-year-olds. She also sounds a whole hell of a lot better than just about anyone. Her signature grey streak is the only indication of her age visible from offstage, and the legendary blues artist—with as many Grammy awards as she has fingers—is still an anomaly and an icon. 8 pm. Arlene Schnitzer. $55.00-$112.50.

Bahamas and Jack Johnson

Let's be clear. This pick is NOT ADVOCATING A JACK JOHNSON SHOW. Bahamas, the opening act for Curious George's favorite flip-flop wearing surfer, is the one worth seeing of this pair. Afie Jurvanen (even his name is awesome) is the former guitarist for Feist with a velvety tenor that flows over his self-taught, jarring and reverb-filled guitar riffs. Johnson's record label Brushfire Records picked up Bahamas in 2012; an excellent find. 7:30 pm. Arlene Schnitzer. $80.60.

Carrie: The Musical

With a 2013 remake of the classic Stephen King horror flick set to hit theaters next week (staring Julianne Moore and Chloë Grace Moretz), what better time to revisit the musical retelling of the blood-splattered, telekinetic misfit who totally looses it and reeks havoc on all the popular kids in her high school. Music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment), and lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose). Various times. The Moore Theatre. $17.50 - $45.
