Out of Town 11/5-11/13

friday 7

After the hilarious Lena Dunham directed video for "I Wanna Get Better," pop group Bleachers—a side project of Fun guitarist Jack Antonoff—reached #2 on the Alt and Rock charts with its debut Strange Desire. The video depicts Antonoff as a recently dumped psychiatrist dealing with loveless couples, over-sexed blondes and disgruntled teens. If nothing else, this music will make you dance. Wild Club opens. 8 pm. Crystal Ballroom. $18-20.

JD McPherson If Little Richard and JD McPherson weren't decades apart in their musical careers, I would swear that the young McPherson took lessons on piano-banging rhythm and blues music straight from the master. With obvious influences like Fats Domino and the rockabilly kings of the '50s, McPherson twists modern rock and roll with classic Midwest roots. 9 pm. Doug Fir. $16-18.

sunday 9 Shovels & Rope Husband-wife duos are generally either gimmicky and obnoxious or authentically in-sync and complementary. Fortunately, Shovels & Rope, a project of Michael Trent and Cary Anne Hearts (both solo musicians in their own right), falls into the latter category. With entrancing harmonies—Cary Anne carries the songs with a twang that has touches of Dolly Parton and Melissa Etheridge, while Michael provides warmth and grounding with smokey backing vocals—these folk-country crooners are complex and occasionally dark. Case in point: If the band name wasn't morbid enough, the first single off 2014's Swimmin' Time is "The Devil is All Around." 9 pm. Crystal Ballroom. $18-$20.

The closest to a musical onomatopoeia, GWAR's murky metal music pretty much sounds exactly like their all-caps name: a marble mouth of loud, dark opera. But don't let the hijinks and monster costumes fool you, these are quality musicians, especially Jizmak Da Gusha's as the band's centerpiece rapid fire, never-miss-a-100-beats-a-minute drummer. With Decapitated. 8 pm. Roseland. $20.
