Out of Town 4/17 - 4/25

saturday 20

Record Store Day

In much the same way Valentine's Day was created to sell Hallmark Cards, Record Store Day was created to sell outdated musical formats. Typical celebrations of this favorite hipster holiday are special vinyl releases and in-record-store performances (see Sound for more information). In 2012, RSD saw the release of more than 400 RSD specific records from Abba to Kate Bush to the White Stripes. This year, Bowie, Dylan and Notorious B.I.G. join the club. Portland bands Radiation City, OG indie rockers Quasi and trucker-hat-wearing Denver will play intimate in-store sets. 12 pm. Everyday Music. Free.

sunday 21

The infamous man in purple will play two rare ticketed shows. Save for a few one-off performances in hometown Minneapolis in January, and a SXSW secret show last month, Prince has been AWOL from touring the U.S. since 2011. The Roseland only holds 1,400, so even from the "nosebleeds" you'll be able to see the sequins on the man's unbuttoned shirt. 8 pm and 11:30 pm. Roseland. $175-$300.

saturday 20

What better place to celebrate Earth Day than über-hippie Eugene? With the theme of climate change, the festival will host 50 educational booths, a film and lecture series, live music, a plant sale, free bike safety checks, vehicle emissions testing and dozens of caucasians with dreadlocks. 11:30 am. EWEB's Rivers Edge Plaza. Free.

tuesday 23

James Blake

British singer-songwriter who combines striking piano with electronic elements creates hybrid soundscapes that only Dr. Seuss could imagine: Hard mechanical sounds soften and smoothed by his airy voice and soft piano riffs. This musical juxtaposition has won this youngblood a nomination for a Mercury Prize, the coveted award for best album released in the UK and Ireland. The release of his new critically acclaimed album Overgrown was followed at Coachella 2013 by what survivors described as a mind-melding performance. 8 pm. The Neptune. $30.
