Laughter and Reflection with Carol Burnett

The queen of the variety show (a precursor to the modern late night show and sketch comedy shows like "Saturday Night Live"), Carol Burnett was a trailblazer for women in entertainment. The actress and comedian accumulated 23 Emmys during the Carol Burnett Show's run, forcing all the men in suits who doubted a woman could do a variety show to eat crow. She hit the ground running in the 1960s and hasn't looked back, receiving the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2013 and an Emmy nomination as recently as 2009. Wonder how she does it? Now's your chance to find out. The performer will answer questions from the audience in a conversation inspired by the Q&As from her variety show days. 7:30 pm. Paramount Theatre. $31.25-$121.25.

Rodrigo y Gabriela

Acoustic guitar tends to call to mind singer-songwriters who frequent coffee house open mics or classical virtuosos, but Rodrigo y Gabriela bring a raw rock energy to the instrument that is amplified by their combined forces (and some seriously large speakers). The way they dig into the guitars, throwing their bodies into each strum, pluck, and pounding of the hollow wood, exposes their heavy metal roots. Yes, this is acoustic guitar you can head bang to. The pair's first new album in five years, 9 Dead Alive, honors historical figures, such as Harriet Tubman and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. 7 pm. Paramount Theatre. $41.25.

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, septuagenarian, and all-around badass George Clinton is coming to Portland, and the Crystal's infamous, bouncy floors are sure to be bumping to those funky sounds. Even if you've never listened to the master of funk, you'll recognize his widely sampled songs from their appearances in hip-hop and R&B hits by the likes of Aaliyah, Dr. Dre, Warren G, De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and while Clinton might prefer cash (the iconic musician started the Flashlight campaign in 2012 to shed light on copyright abuse), you certainly can't blame the artists for wanting his memorable beats and melodies on their tracks. 9 pm. Crystal Ballroom. $25-$27.

thursday 15

Ursula K. Le Guin, Cheryl Strayed & Lidia Yuknavitch

Whether you're a serious book nerd or simply a fan of these talented Portland authors, there's something in this Bitch Media-sponsored event for every level of lit-obsessed. The authors will discuss some of their favorite long out-of-print books that are finding new life through Pharos Editions: Julie Hayden's The Lists of the Past, two novels by Theodora Keogh, and Charles McNichols' Crazy Weather. Bitch Media: A Feminist Response to Pop Culture editor-in-chief Kjerstin Johnson moderates a discussion designed to bring these once-dusty pages back to the hands and hearts of eager readers. 7 pm. Powell's Books and Cedar Hills Crossing. Free.
