Out of Town 5/29 - 6/6

friday 31

Blitzen Trapper

Taking vintage country sounds and making them new, Blitzen Trapper stylishly combines '70s-style folk with modern rock and roll. Neil Young meets Wilco meets new-school experimental rockers in the family of Dr. Dog, Dawes and Deer Tick. The critics-favorite name drop hit a high point when Blitzen Trapper released the acclaimed album Furr in 2008. Since then, the band has been touring and recording, further refining its rejuvenative songwriting. 9 pm. Doug Fir. $25.

With a stage covered in vintage rugs and a balcony with overstuffed couches, the homey Mississippi Studios will be an ideal large-scale host to Califone's Living Room Show Tour. The band has been playing only sets in people's living rooms, testing out material from its new LP. Lead singer Tim Rutili has collaborated with Modest Mouse and Fruit Bats and has released previous albums on Dead Oceans, the record label that is also the home of Akron/Family, Phosphorescent and Tallest Man on Earth, all of whom are members of the same experimental kin, capturing a raw and purposeful unpolishedness. 8 pm. Mississippi Studios. $20.

La Luz

The Runaways, The Raincoats, The Go Gos, The Bengals, Sleater-Kinney and Hole are among the all-female rock bands that have churned out epic music, flipping the stigma that rock and roll is a boys' game. Add Seattle band La Luz to that list. The band's psychedelic surf rock borrows from all of the above lady bands and propels itself to a new high with a feminine softness and a punk edge. Let's just say there's a lot of reverb and a lot of vocal harmonies. The Trashies—rock-based Animal Collective sound alikes, Nucular Aminals—even lo'er-fi Yo La Tengo mixed with Velvet Underground, and Peace—UK indie rockers with a mid-90's grunge aesthetic will join La Luz. 8:30 pm. Black Lodge.

An Evening with Kyle MacLachlan

Kyle MacLachlan has been a central character in David Lynch mysteries since the moment he picked up the ear in Blue Velvet. Best known for his role as Special Agent Dale Cooper on "Twin Peaks" (or for getting down with Elizabeth Berkley in the pool Showgirls, depending who's remembering), MacLaclan is receiving an award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting from the Seattle International Film Festival. He has stayed relevant through the past decade with roles on "Desperate Housewives," "How I Met Your Mother" and as the mayor on the IFC series "Portlandia." Check out a career-spanning clip reel, watch the 90-minute pilot of "Twin Peaks" and enjoy a questionnaire with the actor. 7:30 pm. SIFF Cinema. $35.
