Portland Film Festival

Already a top-notch event, Portland Film Festival has upped its game this year, with screenings in the city's best and funkiest theaters, and on rooftops. Closing night is at Waterfront Park, with a wonderful documentary about an unemployed man from the Bronx who, in 2008, is discovered as a lookalike for Barack Obama and rides the coattails of that politician's climb to fame. A well laid-out and truly interactive website lists all the screenings and events; pay special note to the seminars and coffee meetings with directors and actors. This week-long event is truly pushing the film festival into the upper echelons. Various times. Various venues. PortlandFilmFestival.com. Tickets vary from free to $199 for the all-access VIP pass.

friday 29

Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden

Weeeeee! Trent Reznor and Chris Cornell in the same room? This is going to be like Spring Break '99 all over again! 7 pm. Sleep Country Amphitheater. $37.70-116.85.

saturday 30

The Head & The Heart and San Fermin

Seattle-based band The Head and the Heart are throwing folk music back to its roots—no fancy pedals, no screaming guitar solos, just pure harmonies, basic-but-full rhythm guitar and good ol' fashioned storytelling. San Fermin is an up-and-coming group of baroque pop musicians, easily the most lovable and the infectious you'll hear this year. 6:30 pm. Edgefield. $35.

friday 29

Cascadia Rainingman Festival

Finally, a Northwest answer to the Burn. Sort of. Instead of hippies taking over the desert to dance with fire and trip out on unidentified psychedelics, earnest environmentalists gather on a 100-acre permaculture farm to learn about the role of fungi in soil conservation while listening to folk and socially-conscious hip-hop. A different kind of wild time. Inspired by a shared interested in the Cascadia bioregion, the festival continues through Labor Day Weekend. 5 pm. Finney Farm. $35 suggested donation.
