Out of Town 8/28 - 9/5

seattle

friday 30-sunday 1

Waiting for Godot

Arts on the Waterfront isn't taking the classic bowler-wearing approach to Samuel Beckett's best play about nothing. The 2-year-old production company is using the busy outdoor performance location on the Seattle Pier as a colorful backdrop for Vladimir and Estragon reinterpreted as a pair of young homeless punks (how very grunge of you, Seattle). The resetting makes sense contextually, but is in direct conflict with the wishes of the Beckett estate, which often denies rights to performers who use stage direction conflicting with Beckett's original text (which specifies all four characters must wear bowler hats). Waterfront Park. 7 pm. Free.

saturday 31-monday 2 Bumbershoot

Six music stages (including the Seattle-appropriate Starbucks Stage) are arranged in one of the city's most visually iconic landmarks, at the Seattle Center under the Space Needle. Bumbershoot isn't just a yearly music revival for the birthplace of grunge. The 2013 festival rounds up indie rock royalty Bob Mould, Super Chuck and The Breeders, has a full comedy lineup with standup heavyweights Doug Benson, Judah Friedlander and Patton Oswalt, visual art and film components, theater and a lectures series. Seattle Center. $56-140.

tuesday 3-sunday 8

MusicFest NW

MusicFest NW collects the nationally touring runoff from Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival and sprinkles the bands across the city at 16 of Portland's finest venues. The schedule is so packed with up-and-coming relevant bands it is overwhelming. Pickwick, !!!, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Surfer Blood, the Dodos and Ty Segall, will all be in attendance, not to mention headliners Animal Collective, Neko Case, The Head and the Heart and Charles Bradley. And because there are few things more Portland than a three-day indie music festival, Portlandia's Fred Armisen will also perform. Various venues. $90-300.

through sunday 8

Mummies of the World: The Exhibition

For a mere $67,000, a modern mummification firm called Summum will permanently preserve your body using the ancient and totally bizarre embalming process. If the idea of your body living forever in any way strikes an interest, then this exhibit should be your first stop to learn more about weirdly maintained corpses from Europe, Africa, Asia, the South Pacific and South America. Get your learn on and see some 6,000-year-old dead things. OMSI. $10-21.
