Out of Town 8/7 - 8/15

thursday 8-saturday 10

Galaxy Festival

Portland's free outdoor dance festival with performers and classes in the open air. Polaris Dance Theatre's celebration of all forms of dance will host presenters from Anjali School of Dance, Bridge City Dance Project, Jai Ho Dance Party to Pendulum Aerial dancers. Turn off "So You Think You Can Dance" and enjoy the diverse styles and talent in the great outdoors. 11am. Director Park. Free.

friday 9-sunday 11

The Bite of Oregon

Home of the famous James Beard, a pioneer of the gourmet American food scene, Oregon has a prestigious culinary reputation that will be showcased with the 30th year of this farm-to-table-focused showcase featuring Oregon's best culinary minds. Sample any of the more than 120 items from across the state, plus check outfood carts, music drinks and more. Chefs are challenged to use Oregon-grown ingredients such as Marionberries, potatoes, beef, blueberries and seafood. 11am. Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

saturday 10

Alberta Street Fair

Despite controversy over the 15-block free-for-all bohemian art blowout Last Thursday event (Portland staffers tallied 56 cases of people drinking in the right of way, 54 reports of "odors of marijuana," and seven people urinating in the street in just one hour of the event earlier this year—sounds like a party to us) the Alberta Street Fair continues on, a more tame version of the Last Thursday proceedings. The 16th annual event brings vendors, three stages of music and group art projects like the Neighborhood Art Project that transforms milk cartons, boxes and other recyclables into DIY art displays. 11 am. Alberta Street between NE 11th and NE 30th. Free.

sunday 11

Best Coast

Former child actor Bethany Cosentino, of Little Caesars and Pepsi commercial fame, and musical partner Bobb Bruno teamed up in 2010 and started a surf music revival band, a lo-fi rock and roll beach party. Their distorted indie pop sounds like cheep beer, driftwood fires and sandy blankets. The band's styling is an animal T-shirt designer's dream, with album covers sporting kittens on the coat and bears hugging the state of California. Songs consist of odes to summer and romance sifted through an echo-heavy filter, because every So Cal vacation deserves a soundtrack. 8 pm. Neumos. $20.
