Out of Town 9/4-9/11

thursday 4

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

During the 2007-2008 TV writers strike, instead of sitting on his butt and complaining, Joss Whedon kept on writing. The result was some of the best work of his career, a 40-minute Internet-distributed short starring the effervescent Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, a misfit villain trying really hard to be evil, and the always hilarious Nathan Fillion as his asshole nemesis Captain Hammer (psst...his penis is the hammer). Live interpretation opens Thurs. Sept 4. Thursdays-Saturdays, 7 pm. Continues through Sept. 27. Funhouse Lounge. $12.

friday 5

Brandi Carlile and the Oregon Symphony

Had riding boxcars and swilling moonshine been a pathway to alt-country stardom, Brandi Carlile probably would have been happy to ride that train. Even though her twangy guitar chords and smoky vocals have the trademarks of hobo-rock, she also sings with the sugar-coated sentiment of a bright-eyed girl who still believes in unicorns. The Seattle native's breakout hit, "Dreams," was in heavy rotation in 2009, but that song really only provides a glimpse to the full breadth of her talent. Performing with the Oregon Symphony, that full scope will be on display. 7:30 pm. Arlene Schnitzer. $22-44.

friday 5

The Avett Brothers

North Carolina-bred brothers Scott and Seth Avett have built a dedicated fan base in their 14 years performing together. That's probably why two of their three shows in Oregon this month are already sold out. The band's folksy mix of bluegrass, country, honky tonk and ragtime has made it a touring favorite, if not a radio staple. Still, the use of Avett Brothers' songs on popular shows such as "Friday Night Lights," "Parenthood" and "One Tree Hill" is a testament to the band's broad fan base and appeal. 7 pm. McMenamins Edgefield. $40-$45.

tuesday 9

Rob Zombie

Quite possibly the most terrifying Caucasian with dreadlocks...EVER...Rob Zombie's career consists of freaking out the masses with suspenseful and horror-instilling song and film for over 20 years. Portland's heavy metal, kick-ass head-bangers Red Fang open the show. 7 pm. Cuthbert Amphitheater. $40.
