Re: “Why Count Butterflies?

Butterflies are actually not good or important pollinators. And butterfly Counts tell us nothing about the underlying causes of butterfly population booms or crashes. That's because most butterflies die from predation in the egg and young caterpillar stages and humans cannot observe and measure this predation. The article is also incorrect in leading the public to believe planting milkweed in home gardens will boost Oregons monarch butterfly populations. That's because the number of new milkweed stems home gardeners plant is insufficient to offset even 1% of the amount of stems that are mowed or sprayed along Oregons roadways each year, mostly by the Oregon Dept of Transportation.

Re: “Plight of the Monarchs

Monarch Advocates Of Central Oregon is part of the milkweed plant conservation problem in Oregon via diverting public attention away from wanting to take action to stem the root cause of milkweed decline in Oregon (government agency spraying and mowing of milkweed along roadsides). Instead of getting the public interested in saving the existing milkweed in Oregon, Monarch Advocates Of Central Oregon urges the public to purchase and plant laughably tiny amounts new milkweeds in home gardens, school yards, library gardens, etc. which cannot offset even one percent of the amount of wild milkweed being lost due to road agency spraying and mowing. In this way, Oregon, Monarch Advocates Of Central Oregon is contributing to the decline of milkweed abundance in Oregon.
