Quick Bites: On To The Big City

It's a fact of life in Central Oregon that many of your friends will move away to the big city (i.e. Portland) at some point to chase things like romance, nightlife and living wages. Next month one of Quick Bite's best "friends" is making the move to the big city. Deschutes Brewery launches its new Portland location May 2. The brewery is hosting a media event April 25, allowing a sneak peek at the new digs. The brewery is located in swanky Pearl District and will offer a similar selection of craft brews and pub food that has made Deschutes famous. Unlike other friends who don't write or call, Deschutes will stay connected to Central Oregon. In fact it's not really leaving at all, just branching out. Take care of her Portland. She's one of our best friends.

Speaking of branching out, Chef Timothy Garling has been doing a bit of that lately with his popular cooking classes at Jackalope Grill. Because of the strong interest in the classes, which feature cooking tutorials capped off by wine and food, Garling has been adding additional slots. The next class is slated for April 21. Classes are 6 pm Monday night at Jackalope. Cost is $50. 318-8435 to reserve a spot.

If you want to skip the cooking and go right for the wine, Blacksmith is offering Wednesday Tastings. The evening tastings are a bargain at just $10 and feature approximately eight wines. The event is MC'd by Blacksmith's in-house sommelier, Kevin Gilman, and will spotlight a different winery from week to week. Info and reservations, 318-0588.

Finally, Quick Bites still has our collective ear to the ground for news of Super Burrito's triumphant return to Bend. The new sign is up on the Columbia Bank building next to Alpenglow, but the beloved burrito joint still hadn't confirmed an official opening as of last week.
