Republicans in Clark County, WA turned a deeper shade of red after MSNBC commentator Keith Olbermann exposed them for posting a pack of lies about Barack Obama on their website.

On Jan. 17, the site published a smear against the Democratic presidential contender alleging, among other things, that "Barack Hussein Obama" is a Muslim (he isn't) and that he took his oath of office as a senator on the Koran instead of the Bible (he didn't).

"This is chilling information about a candidate for the highest office in the Country especially given the radical Muslim claims that they will destroy American [sic] 'from the inside,'" the post concluded.

After Olbermann exposed the smear the Clark County GOP took it down - but not before alert blogger Jon DeVore had grabbed a screen shot of it.

"Recently information which we received from various sources regarding the background of Presidential Candidate Barack Obama was posted to our website," the Clark County GOP site now says. "This information was not properly researched and was found to have some factual errors and some exaggerations. It has always been our goal to fact check what we post to the website and to post accurate information. We apologize for not having done our due diligence in this situation."

Uh, whatever. But as the LoadedOrygun blog pointed out, "we are all familiar by now with the text of these lies - lies that were widely debunked on national television months ago, and have since been debunked again and again in a wide range of media. How could it be possible that the Clark County GOP did not know these statements were false when they posted this racist trash on their website?"

Ironically enough, the Clark County GOP site is now headed with a quote from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.: "Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true."

For the past week or so, “Zeo” of the NW Republican blog has had his jock strap in a knot over the prospect of Congress repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” rule. To hear Zeo tell it, if DADT is repealed and gays are allowed to serve openly in the US military it will mean the end not only of our armed forces but of America, its economic system and civilization in general.
