Schools Aren’t the Problem 

Opinion on the elimination of chocolate milk in schools.

Shawn Blount's article concerning the elimination of chocolate milk and presumably other flavors of sugar-sweetened milk in schools is rational.  However, if sweetened milk is eliminated, the question becomes how many children will voluntarily drink plain milk.  My guess is not many, and they would then switch to other more sweetened drinks.  If all sweetened drinks including fruit juices are eliminated in schools, what is left?  It would seem water would be the best choice.

My conjecture is that sugar from sweetened milk that children drink at school is trivial compared to their out-of-school sugar sweetened liquid consumption.  Reduced sugar consumption by children then becomes primarily a parental responsibility, and it appears that many parents are not doing a particularly good job in this area.
