Deschutes Brewery & Public House

$$ NW Bond St. 541-382-9242. Since its humble beginnings as Bend's first brewpub in the late 80s, Deschutes has grown into a virtual microbrewing empire under the guidance of CEO and founder Gary Fish. The one constant has been the Bond street pub, known among locals simply as "The Brewery." In addition to a steady rotation of can't-be-found-anywhere-else limited edition beers, Deschutes' pub has an extensive upscale pub menu that includes hometown favorites like brewery fish and chips, and burgers made with locally raised Borlen beef with many items made with their distinctive brews. And to satisfy your summer time craving for BBQ ribs, Deschutes' can't be missed. Virtually the entire menu is prepared in-house and features local, sustainable ingredients whenever possible. There is always a crowd as this is a popular place with tourists and locals alike, and Deschutes doesn't take reservations. The Dish: Children's menu; Locals' Night, Monday, featuring $3.50 20 oz. beers and $6.50 Borlen beef burgers; lunch, dinner and late-night menu daily. Sidewalk seating.

Slick's Que Co.

Barbecue/Southern. 240 E. Cascade Ave., Sisters. 541-719-0580. You won't have to hop a plane to Texas for authentic pit BBQ, though you may have to take a short drive to Sisters. Owner, Ray Slicker, opened this mouth-watering pit-style BBQ joint in May of 2009, and previous to the grand opening trained under some of the top BBQ masters in the country. Slick's is a bit different than other "Que" restaurants in Central Oregon, as they use the "Low and Slow" split wood method of smoking their meats. That means the pulled pork on your sandwich was on the BBQ pit for nearly 18 hours. And you better get there early because they're open from 11am until they're out of it, meaning they serve what came out of the smoker that day and when they're out, they close up for the day. Come in for pork baby back ribs or St. Louis style ribs, served on Friday and Saturday only. The Dish: Lunch and dinner, closed Mon. and Tues.
