Roots Festival Kickoff with Patchy Sanders

Ashland is more known for its top-notch theater than for its music scene, but folk orchestra Patchy Saunders is trying to change that. Combining minor-key medieval song structures with Americana soul, the band ventures outside of the typical realm of southern Oregon music in a classically influenced menagerie with a focus on the little things. "Our music is really orchestrated," said violinist Sara Wilbur. "We will spend weeks or months writing a new song, crafting every part and going over options for every measure. That seems very classical to me to be particular about the details."

With Brothers Reed. Thurs., Sept. 25. 9pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. Free.

Redwood Son

Singer-songwriter Josh Malm is the brains behind Redwood Son, a mixture of Jack Johnson-style, down-to-earth lyricism, and funky, jamming instrumentation. With an authentic Americana stride, Malm sprinkles jazz, pop and rock into his varied songwriting.

Fri., Sept 26. 7 pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St. Free.

Pigs on the Wing

Pink Floyd recently announced that the band will debut a new album in November, The Endless River, its first release in over 20 years. But don't expect Portland tribute band Pigs on the Wing to cover the new material. The band imitates the Dark Side of the Moon era of the classic rock band with energetic performances of the Floyd's greatest hits. Sat., Sept. 27. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $12.
