The snowball that is coaches and other big-wigs calling for a Division I college football playoff is getting bigger by the week, and the Big 12 Conference this season is making a case for a playoff all by itself.

This after a weekend that saw then No. 5 Oklahoma spank then No. 2 Texas Tech 65-21, creating a situation in the Big 12 that could leave a Top 7 team out of a BCS bowl game.

With wins this week in games they should win, Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma all would have 7-1 conference records AND they would have 1-1 records against each other.

The bottom line is that only two of the three current Big 12 teams who are in the Top 7 would get to play in a BCS bowl game under the current format.

It also means - and this is a good enough argument for a playoff in itself - that people in Texas will need to actually cheer for Oklahoma to beat Oklahoma State this weekend, but not by so much that the Sooners would leapfrog the Longhorns in the ultra-close BCS standings.

It's been a problem virtually the entire life of the BCS. And this season, because of the conference affiliations the BCS bowls have, we likely will be treated to a barnburner of an Orange Bowl featuring Boston College and Cincinnati while an exciting and national championship-caliber team like Texas Tech will be relegated to the Cotton Bowl to play Ole Miss.

Folks have been talking about a playoff for years, but only now are big time coaches speaking up in favor of a new system. The coaches are finding that their old adage, "everything will work itself out in the end," just isn't the case anymore. It didn't work out in the end in 2001 either, Duck fans will remember.

A squeaky wheel doesn't always get the grease - especially when there's millions of dollars at stake like there are with the current bowl game format.

But bigger names have louder voices and sometime very soon that squeaky wheel will be changed. - Ted Taylor
