The Traveling Camera: Valley of Fire

A shot from Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

The common wisdom on landscape photography emphasizes soft light.

Most serious landscape photographers utilize the light of early morning or late afternoon. First light being one of the most rewarding. On a recent trip, I stopped in the colorful Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. We arrived around noon at the location. After a short hike we found the wave formation. Since there were pretty photogenic clouds in the sky, I decided to try my luck. Using a polarizer filter, I saturated the image and popped the colors. We decided to come back later for the soft light shot, which we did.

At home I decided to use the midday shot due to the clouds because the harsher light further showed the wavelike rock formation.

This shows again why my own photo doctrine reads like this: “There is always a way to get a good photo no matter what time of day.”
