Top 10 Books it Seemed Everyone in Bend Was Reading in 2009

Top reads from the year in literature from Bend bookstore owner Hayley Wright.

Due to restrictions in the recent Top Ten edition of The Source, we had to hold a two lists from the print edition. Here is the first of those, two which was penned by Hayley Wright of Between the Covers Books.

1. Surf Is Where You Find It by Gerry Lopez

Written by surf legend Gerry Lopez, it is a collection of 38 stories about those who have been influential in the sport -- surfing anytime, anywhere, and in any way.

2.The Help by Kathryn Stockett

An illustrative tale of what it was like to be a black maid during the civil rights movement of the 60's, this story beautifully shows the complex spectrum of the black/white relationship -- not only the hate, abuse and mistrust, but the love, attachment and dependence.

3.  The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story and financial intrigue, this book introduces new "she-roe" Lisbeth Salander to the literary scene.

4.  The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Graham

Malcolm Gladwell, the well-known author of Blink and The Tipping Point examines the factors that contribute to high levels of success and presents a galvanizing blueprint for making the most of human potential.

 7. The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbury

Translated from French, this novel is set in an elegant hotel in the center of Paris, where a ferocious autodidact concierge and a super-smart 12-year-old girl form a unique friendship -- absorbing in it's reflections on the nature of beauty and the meaning of life and death.

8. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

A heartbreaking, funny and beautifully written tale of the contemporary adolescence of a Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he seems destined to live.

9. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

Written in epistolary format, this book is a lovely tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation and of a society of friends devoted to food, books and conversation.

10. Hannah's Dream by Diane Hammond

Written by local author Diane Hammond, this is a charming story about an aging elephant and her devoted caretaker – a tribute to the strong bonds that form between humans and animals.
