Virtual Talk: Being "Woke" and "Doing the Work": Art as Activism as Subject

What is the difference between activism as the subject of art and art as a catalyst for change? In a world that feels more torn apart by crisis than ever, the arts are more necessary for healing and peace-building than at any point in recent history. Tremendous creativity is required to meet our moment. But can contemporary art make a difference for those who don't have access to its white-washed and white-walled spaces? Devon VanHouten-Maldonado will discuss building community and healing through art in some of Chicago's most under-resourced and violent neighborhoods, suggesting small and big solutions for meaningful social justice centered actions for artists and creatives.
