Watch these Movies

It's a good week for film in Bend. Here are three worth watching this week.

Rockshow: Paul McCartney and Wings

In 1976, Paul McCartney was peaking, again. It wasn't a decade earlier, when adolescent girls screamed so hard that they fainted, but by the mid-'70s McCartney had moved on to more conceptual projects when he and the band Wings took on a 31-stadium Wings Over America Tour—his first in the states since the Beatles 1966 tour—of which many of the shows were taped at Paul's request. The tour confirmed that McCartney, even without his beloved Beatles, and even while sporting one of the worst mullet haircuts in music history, was still the king of stadium rock. Highlights from shows in Los Angeles, Seattle and New York City. (BB) 7 pm, Monday, Jan. 13, Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $12.

The Long Bike Back

Highway 20 scribbles from Newport, Oregon, to Cape Cod, a blue highway that provides a cross-section of America—and also, in "The Long Bike Back," serves as a metaphor for a cyclist, injured in a hit-and-run car accident, who joins with his brother to bike across America and raise awareness about bike safety. Easy going and beautifully filmed. (PB) 9 pm, Thursday, Jan. 16, McMenamin's, 700 NW Bond. $5.

Backcountry Film Festival

Naked skiing, poor man's "heli-skiing," women who rip, families who rip together, and a community that fights to save its local ski hill—all part of a ten film event celebrating human-powered winter experiences (no snow machines here) and a fundraiser for Winter Wildlands Alliance, a nonprofit seeking to preserve snowy backcountry experiences. Among the well-curated selection is Strong, an eight-minute short on avalanche survival, and Morning Ritual, a three-minute look at the new ski bum—those who skin and ski in the predawn hours before heading to their cubicles. More than just sexy ski porn, the BFF rewards filmmakers who approach winter adventure from a fresh angle. (JW) 7 pm Friday, Jan. 10. Volcanic Theatre Pub. $10 at
