Discover Your Forest invites you to discover your national forest while participating in a guided Lava River Cave tour! Immerse yourself in the volcanic history of central Oregon while exploring Lava River Cave.
At Discover Your Forest, we want visitors to do more than visit. Forge a life-long connection to your public lands as interpretive guides lead you through the geologic history and ecology of Lava River Cave. During the two-mile hike through Oregon’s longest lava tube, explore 65,000-year-old cave features and get to know the Oregon bats who call Lava River Cave home.
Whether local or visiting, all family members will learn exciting new information about Newberry National Volcanic Monument. At Discover Your Forest, we are committed to creating the next generation of environmental stewards and are excited for youth ages 8-12 to earn their Newberry National Volcanic Monument Junior Ranger badge during the tour!
Lava River Cave guided programs are available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, June 24th - September 2nd. Programs are at 10:00 and 1:00 and last up to two hours. No hiking or caving experience is necessary. Participants must come prepared for the cold, in close-toed shoes, and have a flashlight. Flashlight rentals are $7 if necessary. Dogs are not permitted, and children under eight are not permitted. All participants must follow cave white-nose syndrome policies. Prior registration is required. A valid federal lands pass is required (America the Beautiful, Northwest Forest Pass or day use pass).
Tours for participants ages 8-12 are free, provided a flashlight and earn their Jr Ranger badge. Tours for participants ages 13-17 are $30 and ages 18+ are $60 per person. Flashlight rentals are $7 each. Due to recent changes in federal funding streams, the Lava River Cave tour proceeds will support Discover Your Forest operations and allow us to continue our mission of connecting visitors to their public lands.
