McMenamins Irish Stout
McMenamins honors the Irish and St. Patty's Day each March with their Irish Stout. The stout is brewed in the tradition of many dry Irish style beers, much like Guinness. What does dry mean when it comes to beer? Dry refers to the lack of residual sweetness found in some stouts. Stouts are normally characterized by their chocolately aromas, which would imply sweetness, but in the dry style, the end result is a crisp, refreshing draught. McMenamins Irish Stout features pronounced roasted barley flavors with a pleasing to the taste buds chocolate-espresso balance.
McMenamins Workingman's Red
With the ever-present Guinness image on the market, other Irish beers often get overshadowed, the Irish Red style beer included. During the spring McMenamins does no such thing. Franciscan monks brewed the first Irish Red style beer in Ireland in the 14th Century. The style notably uses un-malted roasted barley, which originated because the Irish wanted to avoid British-imposed malt taxes. Bend Brewing Co.'s Coconut Stout
It's not necessarily Irish themed, but it is a stout and now on tap at Bend Brewing Company just in time for St. Patrick's Day. An Almond Joy might come to mind when contemplating how a coconut stout may taste. A fair comparison, but this stout is less sweet than you'd imagine, though satisfyingly sweet enough. The flavor pleasantly blends with the hints of chocolate leaving you with a smooth, creamy brew. What could make this even better? BBC has it on nitro - we're in bliss.
Silver Moon Brewing will have a special green beer on tap for St. Patty's Day. It'll be a lite lager with an Irishy green tint. Also, Deschutes Brewery will have an Irish red on tap and refuses to serve green beer. Take your pick this St. Patty's Day!
